Description of Work

The North Carolina Zoo is seeking an energized and collaborative team member to be a part of the Facilities Operations Team. The Construction Plan Reviewer will represent the Maintenance Department as well as other service departments in the review of architectural and engineering construction drawings specifications and submittals for new projects and make comments and recommendations for efficient access and work procedures serviceability safety reduced replacement intervals preferred products and reduced maintenance. Will perform other tasks as assigned.

Key Responsibilities
Perform construction design reviews
Perform on-site inspections
Read and interpret construction drawings (blueprints) specifications and technical drawings & literature
Develop plans and specifications for small in-house projects
Participates in designer scope of work for various projects
Develop and maintain a preferred products and design standards list
Maintains electronic and hardcopy files of O&M manuals drawings and other technical literature

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed onthe vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge skills and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are notrequired. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings (blueprints) specifications and technical drawings & literature.

  • Working knowledge and experience in the maintenance and repair of building systems with an awareness of serviceability issues confronted by service personnel in various trades to include plumbing HVAC and electrical.

  • Working knowledge of building construction including materials & installed equipment; methods & techniques; standard practices codes rules & regulations pertaining to the major building trades.

  • Experience in producing small technical drawings and sketches of moderate complexity drawn to scale with appropriate symbols and notes and the ability to write specifications of limited complexity.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday 7am - 4pm OR 8am - 5pm

  • Will be required to serve as Incident Command Support Staff on a weekend/holiday rotational schedule

  • Must be able to participate in the Zoos Occupational Health Program

  • Must be able to hear and respond to radio communications.

  • Must have the physical agility to move over and about all types of equipment and in tight spaces climb stairs and ladders be comfortable on rooftops or below grade and navigate uneven terrain on foot to perform inspections and analyzation.

  • Must be able to work in all types of weather and outdoor field conditions.

  • Must have the ability to enter confined spaces if required.

  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

  • Must be able to operate motor vehicles at day and at night.

  • High degree of attention to detail and documentation

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and within a team.

  • Problem solving skills to recognize research and provide solution for design issues.

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution

AND

two (2) years of progressive technician level experience;

OR

an equivalent combination of education and experience.
