Particular Duty Assignment: The Academy Deputy Instructor responsibilities include developing lesson plans instructing various topics and subject matter for the Basic Peace Officer Certification course and in-service and continual education training courses. Deputy Instructors also serve as panel members to cadet selection boards when necessary. The Deputy Instructor position requires occasional assistance to physical training instructors by participation in physical fitness exercises with the cadets. Deputy Instructors assist with firearms instruction and emergency vehicle operations so the Deputy Instructors will be capable of managing other strenuous activities such as firearms safety support Emergency Vehicle Operations training support and ALERRT training role player and participant.

Work Schedule / Supervision: The candidate selected will report to a Sergeant in the Academy. Work Schedule will typically be daytime hours; however there will be times when the Academy Deputy Instructors will be required to adjust their work schedule to accommodate training needs.

Minimum Qualifications: To be eligible for appointment to the Academy a Deputy Instructors must possess the following minimum qualifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • TCOLE Peace Officer License.
  • Valid Texas Drivers License.
  • Must have Firearms Qualifications (within the last 12 months per TCOLE rules and regulations).
  • Must be up to date in all training requirements and hours to be licensed as a Peace Officer under TCOLE rules and must maintain all requirements.
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of Law Enforcement experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with the public other employees and elected officials.
  • Possess an undergraduate degree or have held an Instructor Proficiency Certificate for a minimum of 2 years
  • Possess a strong interest in training and working in a team environment
  • Should not exhibit a pattern of sick time abuse or absenteeism
  • Deputies should be highly motivated and able to perform essential job functions with minimal supervision.
  • A positive attitude towards assignments fellow employees citizens and superior officers.
  • Candidates must possess a TCOLE Basic Police Instructor Certification.

Salary Range: $33.60 - $50.40 hourly based on qualifications

Additional Qualification Criteria: Candidates must successfully complete the following tasks in order to progress in the selection process:

  • A Written letter of intent - describing the candidates qualification training and job history.
  • Physical Abilities Test each candidate must achieve passing score on each event in order to progress to the next phase: The physical abilities test is a 1.5-mile run in 15:00 minutes or less and will be adjusted for age. Perform 21 push-ups or more in 1 minute also adjusted for age. Perform 29 sit-ups or more in 1 minute; adjusted for age.

  • Lesson Plan and Presentation Candidates must prepare a 30-minutes lesson plan on a topic to be determined by the Academy addition the candidate must prepare a 30-minute presentation. The presentation must include at least one form of media (i.e. PowerPoint) and a handout. Videos will not be acceptable as a form of media. The presentation must also include a form of evaluation of the objectives learned (i.e. written exam). The lesson plan will be due at the time of the Oral Review Board interview.

  • Oral Review Board Candidates will be interviewed by a panel of Academy staff. Candidates must place in the Most Ready category to be considered. Ready candidates will be considered if the candidate possesses special subject matter expertise. Not Ready candidates will not be considered at this time. All candidates will be provided written feedback relative to their strengths and weaknesses.

Selection Process:

  • All candidates will be notified of the lesson plan topic.
  • All candidates will be notified of the Physical Fitness Assessment time and date.
  • All candidates will be notified of Oral Review Board interview date and time.
  • All candidates will be notified of Presentation time and date after the completion of the Oral Review Board interview.
  • Selected candidates will be appointed from the Most Ready group
