Arise/EFR is looking for a Disability Advocate
Job Summary:
The Disability Advocate assists Madison County residents who have a disability with finding support and services needed to live independently in their community. The advocate helps with identifying barriers and offers direct support as well as referrals to other resources. This position also provides education and technical assistance to the community to increase accessibility and the full inclusion of people who have disabilities. The advocate will become familiar with the Americans with Disabilities Act housing regulations public benefits and other local state and federal laws that affect the rights of individuals with disabilities to promote equal access and opportunity. Services are provided in Madison County.
Qualifications:
- Associates degree preferred; or equivalent combination of education and related experience working in the disability advocacy field and/or with people with disabilities.
- General knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act and other disability regulations
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent advocacy skills and ability to form collaborative relationships
- Clean driver license and reliable insured inspected vehicle
- Computer proficiency
Essential Functions:
- Educate and empower people with disabilities to make well-informed decisions regarding options for health care housing benefits employment etc.
- Provide one-on-one support to individuals to apply for benefits make appointments complete paperwork and navigate service systems
- Provide information and referral for disability related inquiries via phone email or in person
- Participate in Action and Education Alerts
- Visit locations in Madison County to assess physical accessibility based on established standards
- Conduct education and awareness presentations to community partners groups and individuals about ARISE-EFR support and services
- Participate in community meetings task forces committees to represent the interests of people with disabilities
Work location: Onondaga County - Madison County Office Chittenango ARISE at Doc Marshall Farm
Hours and days: Monday-Friday 8:00am -4:00pm
Compensation: $20.00 -$20.25 per hour
Non -Exempt
40 hours per week including one-hour paid lunch
