Orphaning & Insolvency Analyst - Hybrid

The Opportunity

Join the dynamic Orphaning and Insolvency team at the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) and contribute to ensuring Albertas energy sites are responsibly closed when companies are unable to meet their this role your analysis directly supports fair cost recovery regulatory compliance and protection of the public interest. The Orphaning & Insolvency Analyst plays a key role in analyzing coordinating and overseeing regulatory processes related to defunct and insolvent companies in Albertas energy sector. The role focuses on providing analysis and recommendations to decisionmakers on two key cost recovery and enforcement programs: the Working Interest Cost Claim Program and AER Cost Orders. Through this work the Analyst supports parties seeking to recover unpaid closure costs from those who failed to meet their financial obligations and reimbursing where applicable from the Orphan Fund. The Orphaning & Insolvency Analyst also ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and the closure framework while preparing and administering regulatory tools with accuracy precision and accountability. What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Assess complex financial reimbursement submissions under the Working Interest Cost Claim (WICC) Program to confirm compliance with regulatory requirements and the closure framework.

  • Collaborate with internal partners and external organizations including the Orphan Well Association (OWA) to validate claims and resolve issues.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for industry inquiries providing clear guidance on cost recovery and regulatory expectations.

  • Lead the evaluation of Cost Orders ensuring eligibility and supporting parties through the process when closure costs remain unpaid.

  • Support Specialists in preparing regulatory tools including Orders Orphaning Memos and Amendments for statutory decision-making ensuring legislative compliance data accuracy and operational alignment.

What were looking for in you:

  • Post-secondary diploma in Finance Business Engineering Social Science Science or a related field.

  • 3 years of related work experience; experience working in a regulatory compliancefocused environment is preferred.

  • Experience with environmental policy and/or regulations an asset.

  • Strong attention to detail and confidence working with complex records and data.

  • A collaborative teamfirst mindset and comfort working in a fastpaced environment.

  • Strong critical thinking skills sound judgment and a high level of accountability in decisionmaking and followthrough.
