Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A terminal degree (i.e. a doctorate in behavioral sciences counseling psychology or specific related academic field) from an accredited university.
  2. Possession of a current California license as a Marriage and Family Therapist Clinical Social Worker Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor or Psychologist.
  3. Demonstrated leadership ability and developed skills in brief psychotherapy crisis intervention consultation workshops/group psychotherapy and outreach.
  4. Demonstrated experience providing and coordinating the provision of individual couples and group counseling on an independent basis for clients of various ages.
  5. Evidence of clinical leadership experience necessary for providing direction and guidance in assessing and treating a broad spectrum of psychological problems ranging from personal/social adjustment issues to severe emotional disturbances.
  6. Demonstrated experience with interventions and clinical case management with complex and high-risk clients.
  7. Ability to utilize and demonstrate professional counseling techniques and strategies to meet the needs of a student body with varied backgrounds cultures gender identities ages sexual orientations and other diverse qualities.
  8. Demonstrated experience handling multicultural intersectional and social justice issues and proven ability to interact with diverse individuals and groups.
  9. Ability to train and supervise other professionals and paraprofessionals (i.e. associates and/or interns/trainees practicum students).

Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic multicultural environment. Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Doctoral degree in counseling or psychology related field
  2. Two (2) years experience working in a college university or other higher education setting.
  3. Demonstrate experience cultivating and maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of mental health and medical staff and specialist as well as student administrators faculty and staff
  4. Demonstrate ability to develop and support a positive working environment by exhibiting solution-focused positive cooperative and flexible behavior.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge of laws and ethics pertaining to the field of mental health.
  6. Experience working at a fast pace handling spontaneous work demands.
  7. Evidence of excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative supportive and inclusive environment. Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and training.

Duties:

Under the general direction of the CAPS Director the Faculty Counselor is responsible for:
1) Clinical Duties: Assume psychological counseling responsibilities by providing a full range of clinical consultation and outreach service including: individual group and couples mental health assessment; counseling psychotherapy and case management; emergency assessment and crisis intervention; tele-therapy; biopsychosocial/psychological assessment prevention education; individual organizational and group consultation; treatment/intervention planning and follow through; referrals to and consulting with other professionals on- and off-campus;

2) Training: Training and onboarding new counselors training and oversight of Masters Practicum Traineeships (in collaboration with the CAPS Clinical Coordinator) and Post-Graduate Specialization Programs; While also assisting in the development and implementation of procedures and practices for traineeships in groups workshops and individual treatment for students in Masters and Doctoral programs. attending CAPS and other departmental meetings as assigned;
3) Administrative Duties: Timely documentation of case notes and reports in electronic health records; Participation in CAPS peer review and other activities of the SHC Continuous Quality Improvement program; Data collection reporting and analysis as well as organize and present data. Ability to prepare and present oral and written reports which are clear concise and comprehensive

Additional Duties:
1) Currency in the field: participation at professional trainings workshops and/or conferences as assigned; participation in other assigned SHC and campus committees and activities; and licensure maintenance.
2) Outreach: Classroom group organizations and department presentations and workshops; Provide outreach and programming designed to support various student groups.

This position also assists the CAPS department in promoting the health and wellbeing of all Cal State L.A. students and the campus community. The Faculty Counselor ensures the team provides services that are equitable inclusive culturally sensitive and enhance the quality of campus life.

Selected candidates are required to possess at the time of hire or within 24 months of the start of employment an applicable licensure (such as a licensed psychologist (Ph.D./Psy.D.) licensed professional clinical counselor (LPCC) licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT)) within the State of California.

Salary:

Initial Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary schedule information for the SSP/AR I-AY Classification is available based on the following ranges: (per salary schedule 7/1/2024)

Full-time equivalent Salary Range: $6221 - $11105 monthly
