Job Summary

Description

If you are looking for a research opportunity and a PhD position here is a possibility at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering Technical University of Denmark. The PhD project combines advanced multiscale simulation with experimental methods to improve resistance spot welding. You will join a dynamic research environment where we value diverse perspectives and interdisciplinary collaboration.

This PhD project is focused on numerical simulation of resistance spot welding with existing electro-thermo-mechanical finite element modeling as a foundation. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) will be developed and coupled with the existing model to account for melt pool dynamics to include advection in the thermal modeling and to predict porosities and imperfection trajectories in the final weld. Microstructural simulation of grain sizes and morphology after solidification will be developed together with simulation of metallurgical phase transformations at microscale. Combining these models across length scales it is expected that modelling of weld strength and corrosion resistance will be improved.

Responsibilities
The PhD project will be heavily based on numerical modeling and an ideal candidate will have experience with numerical modeling before starting the project. Experimental testing will also be part of the project since all developed models must be validated by selected experiments. The project also involves collaboration with an abroad university and collaboration with Danish industry.

Your primary tasks in the PhD project will be to:

  • Familiarizeyourselfwithexistingelectro-thermo-mechanicalfiniteelement(FE)simulationof resistance spot welding including comparison to physical welds.
  • DevelopmentofaCFDmodelforsimulationofmeltpooldynamicsandcouplingitwiththeFE model.
  • field simulation. Exploring possibilities and choosing the modeling technique is part of the project.
  • Performsimulationofmetallurgicalphasetransformations.
  • Designandcarryoutexperimentstovalidatethedevelopednumericalsimulationsand/orto help suggesting improvements to the numerical framework.
  • Suggestprocesswindowsforspecificstrengthorcorrosionresistanceperformance parameters based on the numerical modelling.

Furthermoreyourtasksasanacademicemployeewillinclude:

  • Assistanceinteaching.
  • SupervisionofBScandMScstudentprojects.
  • Disseminationofresearchresultsinscientificjournalsandconferences.

Qualifications:

  • Goodunderstandingofnumericalmodelingpreferablyinvolvingfluidmechanicsand/or microstructure related simulations.
