Introduction:

Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (MMLA) is seeking rising 2L and 3L law students to work in our Minneapolis office. These positions require a minimum 30 hour ten week your cover letter please indicate how many hours per week you will be available to work.

Practice Group:

Community Clinic: Program pursues a key element of our Racial Values Statement: Ensuring our work is rooted in the communities we serve. MMLA has partnered with a collection of trusted organizations to place legal aid attorneys in our clients Minneapolis these partner organizations include:

  • African Community Services (ACS)
  • Brian Coyle Center (BCC)
  • Childrens Hospital
  • Division of Indian Work (DIW) and the Minneapolis American Indian Center (MAIC)
  • Harrison Neighborhood Association (HNA) and
  • Waite House

MMLA and these organizations work together to provide holistic services meeting our clients legal and social all things our Clinics strive to be as accessible integrated and comprehensive as possible.

The Minneapolis Community Clinics Unit is recruiting three law students to clerk for the summer. The work will be hybrid: some on-site at MMLAs downtown office or a clinic site and some remotely from home. The work will include:

  • Conducting intake
  • Co-counseling with MMLA Staff Attorneys
  • Legal research and memo-writing and
  • Community outreach

This is a great opportunity for students who want a lot of direct client contact and civil litigation experience. This is also a good way to learn more about the Minneapolis community and to contribute its wellbeing in a concrete way. Each clerk will be directly supervised by an MMLA Staff Attorney.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Apply the principles of MMLAs Racial Justice Values Statement in all interactions.
  • Interview clients.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Prepare case documents including pleadings memoranda letters to opposing counsel etc.
  • Research current policy issues to prepare and present community education materials.
  • Participate in weekly practice group case review meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.
