Job Summary

Definition

Definition: Under direction of the SRPMIC Health & Human Services (HHS) Departments Health Division Director will provide clinical oversight to Community healthcare providers. Provides direct services as a Physician within the River People Heath Center and other Community sites as appropriate. Ensures the highest quality medical care for Community Members and Tribal Enrollees. This job class is treated as FLSA Exempt.

Examples of Tasks

  1. Chief Medical Officer: Serves as Chief Medical Officer for SRPMIC Health Services which includes the River People Heath Center the Medical Unit of the SRPMIC Department of Corrections Child Health Clinics at the Community schools and all other clinic sites established within the Community. Duties include but are not limited to the following:
    • Participates as Co-Chair on the Clinical Coordinating Committee for the Salt River Dialysis Center.
    • Reviews clinical aspects of research proposals under consideration by the SRPMIC Research Committee.
    • Stays current regarding emerging health and disease related issues technologies and research that might affect the SRPMIC. Confers with professional organizations other health care providers research institutions federal and state government programs universities etc. as needed.
    • Ensures the highest quality service standards are established and met by direct reports in all areas of clinical practice and in accordance with generally accepted medical/clinical practices.


  1. Physician Services: Serves as River People Heath Center Physician by providing primary care and preventive services on a full-time basis.
  • Provides direct clinical and preventive services as a primary care provider in the River People Heath Center.
  • Abides by the highest standards in clinical treatment and service to patients and their families.
  • Participates in the peer review process and other continuous quality improvement processes.


  1. Clinical Operations & Administration: Meets with leadership as needed to discuss program successes challenges needed improvements etc.
    • Monitors Clinic services with the goal of continually improving the service delivery to Community Members.
    • Identifies critical areas and programs for special emphasis or management attention.
  • Reviews and approves clinical credentialing and privileges for all clinical staff including contractors.


  1. Leadership Supervision & Mentoring: Provides clinical leadership supervision and mentoring for all assigned medical care staff who provide services within the River People Heath Center or other SRPMIC settings.
  • Monitors and evaluates assigned clinical staff work performance and provides input to the Health Division Director. Provides clinical training and assistance as needed.
  • Establishes performance standards for Clinic staff modeling the highest standards of care and customer service. This includes reviewing and approving clinical services related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) policies practices and methodologies.
  • Works to enhance the relationship between Indian Health Service and SRPMIC Health Services for the benefit of the patients served by the River People Heath Center and for the benefit of SRPMIC long and short-term goals and objectives for the health and welfare of the Community.
  • In coordination with the Clinic Administrator communicates the Clinics goals and objectives to the HHS management team and employees.
  • Serves as an upper-level point of communication contact for clinical and medical resources.


  1. Professional Certification & Education: Remains professionally current with licensure credentials and certifications and best practices at all times as required by the SRPMIC.
  • Obtains Continuing Medical Education credits required annually of Physicians.

  1. Miscellaneous: Performs other job related duties as assigned by the Health Division Director or HHS Director.


Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of primary care level patient services.
  • Knowledge of the Indian Health Service (IHS) and other sources of healthcare for Native Americans.
  • Knowledge of principles of patient-centered and family-centered care.
  • Knowledge of existing and emerging pharmaceutical and medical therapies.


  • Skill with diagnosis.
  • Skill with analysis of healthcare program effectiveness.
  • Skill working with patients and families.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with health care providers resource agencies Tribal officials staff patients families and Community Members.
  • Skill working within a Community clinic setting.
  • Skill working with clinical and non-clinical staff and colleagues.
  • Skill with verbal and written communication with persons at all levels.


  • Ability to heal and comfort.
  • Ability to work effectively with health care providers resource agencies Tribal officials professional and paraprofessional staff patients families and Community Members.
  • Ability to provide mentoring leadership supervision and staff development.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic (DO) degree from an accredited college or university medical school.

  • Board Certification in field of practice required.
  • Licensure to practice medicine in the State of Arizona required.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) registration required.


Experience: Five (5) years experience practicing medicine required. Experience in a Community clinic setting preferred.

  • Experience working in Native American communities preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required.


Equivalency:Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position will be considered.


Underfill Eligibility:An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19 Underfill.

Special Requirements

  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours.
  • May be exposed to blood-borne pathogens bodily fluids and chemicals.
  • Employees in and applicants applying for jobs providing direct services to children are subject to the Community Code of Ordinances Chapter 11 Minors Article X. Investigation of Persons Working With Children.
