For over 60 years Schellinger Construction has been building highways roads and private development projects across Montana. We work primarily in Northwest Montana and provide a full range of services including earthwork trucking gravel crushing concrete supply aggregate surfacing culvert/pipe installation asphalt paving and retail aggregate supply (gravel asphalt). Position Summary

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is responsible for the financial health risk oversight and long-term sustainability of Schellinger Construction and its related entities. The CFO leads and develops the accounting team oversees financial systems and controls and ensures accurate timely financial reporting. This role ensures compliance with accounting banking bonding insurance and regulatory requirements while providing clear financial insight to ownership and operational leaders to support sound decision-making across the organization.


Role Responsibilities

Leadership & Team Development

  • Build and lead a strong accounting team through clear expectations coaching and accountability.
  • Set goals define roles and ensure focus on the right priorities.
  • Lead regular team meetings and ongoing check-ins to align work and address issues.
  • Provide ongoing feedback performance and compensation reviews and support individual development.

Financial Strategy and Owner Advisory

  • Serve as a strategic partner to operations and management to maintain clear communication and alignment.
  • Support long-term planning related to succession tax strategy and capital investments
  • Collaborate with ownership and management to evaluate financial risks



Accounting Controls & Compliance

  • Oversight to ensure timely accurate monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee accounting systems processes and internal controls.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP tax regulations DOT requirements and labor laws.
  • Oversee audits tax planning and coordination with external advisors.
  • Maintain the integrity and reliability of financial data and reporting.



Backup Support & Coverage

  • Provide backup support to the Controller and accounting managers.
  • Step in as needed during absences or peak periods.
  • Maintain working knowledge of key systems processes and deadlines.



Invoices Payroll & Payments

  • Oversee invoice approval and payment control processes.
  • Review and ensure appropriate approval for major vendor payments and disbursements.
  • Review payroll checks and paystubs prior to processing.
  • Serve as an authorized signer on company payments.



Compensation Benefits & Labor Support

  • Provide financial reporting for wage reviews bonuses and profit sharing.
  • Oversee benefit and pension compliance reporting.
  • Oversee credit card and fuel card programs.
  • Support union negotiations by reviewing contracts and providing analysis
  • Provide ad hoc financial analysis.



Systems & Technology

  • Provide oversight of accounting and financial systems.
  • Ensure ERP payroll timekeeping and related systems are reliable and secure.
  • Establish access controls and segregation of duties.



Royalties & Intercompany

  • Oversee royalty calculations and payments.
  • Ensure intercompany transactions are documented and reconciled.

Job Costing & Contract Schedules

  • Support the Payroll & Job Costing Manager.
  • Ensure systems and processes deliver accurate job costs and forecasting.
  • Review and validate contract schedules underbillings/overbillings and margin projections
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Transport or other public sector reporting requirements tied to contract performance.



Risk Insurance & Bonding

  • Oversee insurance compliance including AGCR Captive Insurance.
  • Participate in underwriting and annual renewals.
  • Support claims management.

Investments & Related Entities

  • Provide financial reporting oversight of related companies.
  • Coordinate accounting and advisor relationships.



Qualifications / Experience

  • Bachelors degree in accounting Finance or related field; CPA preferred.
  • 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience including senior leadership responsibility.
  • Experience in construction or other project-based operational environments.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP financial reporting internal controls and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop an accounting team and partner effectively with operational leaders.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office tools; strong financial reporting skills required.
  • Experience with construction ERP systems preferably Spectrum and related payroll timekeeping and reporting systems.
