The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Sport Fish is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Homer Alaska!


What You Will Be Doing:

This five-month position in Homer blends office and field work with approximately three days in the office and two days in the field each the office youll be the public face of the Division of Sport Fish helping with sport fishing questions and regulations licenses charter logbooks and fishing gear addition to public service youll assist with invoice tracking in-season fishery reporting reviewing video weir files entering salmon escapement data and directing questions to other staff when the field you will focus on the Anchor River Chinook salmon marine survival project assisting with capturing Chinook salmon smolt by beach seine and rotary screw trap identifying juvenile salmon species and PIT tagging Chinook salmon smolt. Additional opportunities to get hands on experience supporting other field projects can be expected including razor clam abundance and hand-dig surveys port sampling salmon escapement monitoring stocking salmon smolt and Chinook broodstock collection.

The Homer Sport Fish management group is a large cohesive group with 4 biologists and 14 fisheries technicians to monitor and manage a large diversity of fisheries and stocks in Lower Cook Inlet Management Area. The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position will be stationed at the Homer office with travel to the Anchor River field site 2 days a week. Youll work with a small team of 2-3 at the front counter on the office-based days and with another team of 2-8 on the field days. Additional occasional opportunities to assist with other projects throughout the management area will include travel to the beaches of Cook Inlet the Homer Harbor Deep Creek and Ninilchik River and the Nick Dudiak Fishing Lagoon on the Homer Spit.


Who We Are Looking For:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Interact with the public and department staff daily providing sport fishing information and responding to inquiries professionally and thoroughly.
  • Manage multiple responsibilities including front desk support answering phones assisting customers and processing fisheries data.
  • Use computers daily to process video weir files manage data and assist with office-based projects efficiently.
  • Assist with field projects supporting accurate data collection species identification and prioritizing safety.
  • Balance shifting work schedules and duties between office-based and field-based responsibilities adapting to changing priorities and needs.

This position may be in possession of or have access to firearms/ammunition.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.
