Job Summary

About the role

Proton Intelligence is seeking an earlyto-mid career Process Engineer with hands-on experience in microfabrication cleanroom operations electroplating and wet chemistry ideally applied to medical or biosensor devices to join our team in Melbourne Australia.

Key responsibilities

Process Development

  • Develop optimise and maintain microfabrication processes for medical sensor devices including:
    • Photolithography and patterning
    • Thin-film deposition and etching
    • Electroplating and surface modification
  • Support sensor fabrication involving bio-compatible materials and functional coatings
  • Translate R&D processes into robust manufacturable workflows

Cleanroom & Startup Manufacturing Support

  • Execute hands-on processing in a cleanroom environment
  • Own day-to-day process performance yield improvement and troubleshooting
  • Support pilot manufacturing builds and early production ramp
  • Work closely with device chemistry and quality teams to resolve integration issues

Wet Chemistry & Electrochemical Processes

  • Prepare control and monitor wet chemistry processes including:
    • Electroplating baths
    • Chemical etching and cleaning steps
    • Surface treatments relevant to medical sensors
  • Ensure chemical handling and disposal comply with safety and regulatory expectations

Quality Systems & ISO 13485 Alignment

  • Develop and maintain process documentation in line with ISO 13485
    • SOPs work instructions and batch records
  • Contribute to process validation activities (IQ/OQ/PQ as applicable)
  • Participate in risk management activities (e.g. PFMEA hazard analysis)
  • Support internal and external quality audits
  • Ensure traceability and change control for process updates

Data Analysis & Continuous Improvement

  • Use process data and metrology to drive continuous improvement
  • Apply basic Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Design of Experiments (DOE) techniques to improve yield and reproducibility
  • Support root cause analysis for nonconformances and process deviations

Qualifications & Experience

Education

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering Chemical Engineering Materials Science Biomedical Engineering or a related discipline

Experience

  • 25 years of relevant industry
  • Hands-on experience with microfabrication in a cleanroom
  • Experience with electroplating and/or wet chemistry processes
  • Exposure to medical device and/or sensor fabrication environments is preferred
  • Familiarity with working under a regulated quality system (ISO 13485 preferred)

Technical Skills (Required)

  • Photolithography and thin-film processing
  • Wet and dry etching techniques
  • Electroplating process control and optimisation
  • Experience with bio-compatible materials and surface treatments
  • Cleanroom metrology characterisation and inspection methods
  • Process validation and documentation practices
  • SPC and DOE

Technical Skills (Preferred)

  • Experience with implantable or wearable medical sensors
  • Familiarity with ISO 14971 risk management
  • Experience with applied research
  • Experience scaling processes from lab to pilot production
  • Exposure to contract manufacturers or supplier qualification

Soft skills requirements

  • Creativity and flexibility are key
  • Process and detail oriented
  • Must be hands-on willing to get into the trenches and get hands dirty
  • Familiar with and comfortable functioning in a small fast-paced medical device start-up environment NOT a big company mind-set
  • Must be product focused thinking big picture designing for function and manufacturability and test as part of the complete product -- not a component designer.
