Job Summary
Senior Finance Controller
Full time Independent Contractor
Location: Remote(based inSouth Africa)
U.S. business hours (PST time zone)
Role Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Senior Controller to take full ownership of the finance function and lead a small but growing accounting team. This individual will manage 34 bookkeepers oversee external accounting and tax firms and serve as the primary finance partner to senior leadership.
The objective of this hire is to fully remove finance oversight from the VP of Operations and install a strong proactive finance leader who can both execute and manage.
This is not a junior accountant role. We are looking for a managerial-level professional who has successfully run finance in a small-company environment.
Key Responsibilities
Finance Ownership
Own the entire finance department including accounting operations reporting and controls
Ensure accurate and timely monthly quarterly and annual closes
Oversee AP AR payroll reconciliations and general ledger management
Maintain internal controls and compliance processes
Manage relationships with external auditors tax advisors and other accounting firms
Team Leadership
Directly manage 34 bookkeepers
Provide structure accountability and performance oversight
Establish best practices workflows and documentation
Elevate the overall capability of the finance team
Executive Reporting
Prepare and deliver financial reporting packages to the Founder and senior executives
Provide clear cash flow visibility and forecasting
Deliver variance analysis and operational insights
Translate financial data into actionable business guidance
Compliance & Standards
Ensure compliance with US UK or Canadian GAAP
Maintain tax and regulatory compliance across jurisdictions
Support audits and external reviews
Property Management Finance
Oversee accounting specific to property management operations
Ensure accurate rent roll tracking owner reporting and property-level financials
Monitor property-level profitability and expense controls
Required Profile
Experience
5 years of experience working under US UK or Canadian GAAP
5 years reporting directly to a Founder CEO or senior executive
Recent experience running finance at a small company (critical requirement)
Property management accounting experience strongly preferred
Demonstrated ability to both manage and execute (hands-on operator)
Training Background
Professional training from a major accounting firm such as:
KPMG
EY
PwC
Deloitte
(Big-firm foundation is required for technical rigor. However big-firm-only experience without small-company leadership experience will not be sufficient.)
Credentials
CPA or equivalent certification required
South African CA(SA) acceptable
Other CPA-equivalent credentials considered
