Position: Medical Coder (Certified)

General Description:

Responsible for abstraction assignment and conversion of diagnoses and treatment procedures into codes using ICD-10 and HCPCS. This position will work collaboratively with HIM staff to code hospital inpatient outpatient and physician office episodes. Correlate information from appropriate supporting clinical documentation not limited to Pathology Radiology and/or other Physician Consultations after review by the Attending Physician wherever appropriate. Requires skill in the sequencing of diagnoses/procedures to optimize reimbursement. Ensures that records are coded in an accurate and timely manner. Coder will work on detailed physician chart abstractions and may be a liaison to documentation improvement to optimize physician coding practices for compliance and revenue purposes for the providers. Coder will conduct coding and charging audits including prospective audit on tests and procedures that may have a National or Local Coverage Determination Policy from CMS before performed on a Medicare patient.

Experience/Education Requirements:

Certification in HIM including RHIT RHIA CCS or CPC. Minimum of 2 years of experience in hospital or physician office coding. 5 years of experience preferred. Knowledge of diagnoses/procedures in accordance with ICD-10-CM coding principles for both acute and skilled nursing facilities. EPIC EMC experience preferred. Ability to work with physicians and other coworkers in a collaborative manner. Knowledge of National and Location Coverage Determinations.
