Main Purpose of Job
To develop and implement a bilingual educational program for Deaf students in a language accessible environment as well as provide an enriched bicultural environment conducive to the development of the optimal social and emotional growth of Deaf students. To provide a language enriched environment through use of sign language and printed word to meet the varied needs of Deaf Students.
POSITION DUTIES
Plan deliver and assess classroom instruction and hands-on labexperiences in areas such as food preparation and presentation diversecuisines nutrition and healthy eating baking hospitality culinaryterminology kitchen management culinary industry practices hospitality andsafety and sanitation. Design and make materials to facilitate studentlearning.
Integrate bilingual and visualinstructional strategiesthat support language access and comprehension for deaf and hard-of-hearingstudents including collaboration with interpreters as needed.
Facilitate real-world culinary experiences through school catering events pop-upkitchens and internships guiding students in professional standards of foodservice teamwork and customer interaction.
Supervise and mentor students during on-campus events and off-siteculinary experiences and student internships to ensure safe high-quality andeducational practices.
Manage and operate the Veditz Café providing students with opportunities toapply culinary and business skills while serving teachers staff and visitorsduring regular hours and special events.
Deliver ServSafe instruction andcertification ensuring studentsunderstand and demonstrate food safety standards required by the industry.
Maintain a safe clean and organizedcommercial kitchen environmentthat meets local health codes and supports effective learning.
Develop and maintain weekly lesson plans aligned to course standards andexpectations using student data and assessments to differentiate instructionand promote mastery of culinary competencies.
Implement IEP accommodations andsupplementary aidscollecting data and collaborating with support staff to monitor progress andensure equitable access.
Coordinate and coach students for the DeafCulinary Bowl (DCB)and other competitions fostering leadership creativity and pride in theirculinary skills.
Promotea positive inclusive classroom culture that encourages creativity critical thinkingcollaboration and respect for diverse cuisines and cultures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelors degree required.
Candidates must be eligible to apply for or bewilling to obtain licensure by the Maryland State Department of Education andServSafe certification within a prescribed amount of time.
Fluency in AmericanSign Language and written English required.
Knowledge of the deaf culture deafeducation students with additional disabilities and ability to teach studentson different levels and with varying educational and language acquisitionbackgrounds is required.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Masters degree in Education or special education of Deafstudents Maryland State Department of EducationCertification.
Experience/knowledge in pastry/baking.
Vocational experience in the culinary artsindustry and/or experience in K-12 culinary arts instruction and certificationin ServSafe preferred.
