Job Summary

California State University San Bernardino (CSUSB) is located in San Bernardino in the Inland Empire 60 miles east of Los Angeles and operates a satellite campus in Palm Desert located in Coachella Valley. CSUSB serves approximately 20000 students of which 81% are first-generation college students and graduates about 5000 students annually. As a designated Hispanic Serving Institution CSUSB reflects the dynamic diversity of the region and has one of the most diverse student populations of any university in the Inland Empire and the second highest Hispanic enrollment of all public universities in California. CSUSB employs 467 full-time faculty and offers 48 undergraduate 35 graduate and one doctoral degree programs and 14 academic programs with national accreditation.

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of History at California State UniversitySan Bernardino (CSUSB) invites applications for theAdina Lee Savin and W Benson Harer Visiting Scholar in candidatewill be a member of the CSUSBcommunity for one semester either Fall 2026(midAug-midDec) or Spring 2027(midJan lateMay).This position is designed for scholars taking a semester sabbatical from a home institution or as a postdoc for an up-and-coming applicant should specialize in Ancient Egyptian History ArchaeologyReligion Societyor Art anytime between the Predynastic to the Roman successful candidate will receive housing a partial meal plan $2500 towards relocation expenses anda $27000 stipend.

CSUSBhoststhe Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA) which includesan important collection of approximately 500 artifactsdating from the Predynastic Period to the Coptic of these are visitable in the museums virtual exhibition is currently not sponsoring applicants for H-1B employment that are subject to the $100000 feeestablishedby the Presidential Proclamation: Restriction on Entry of Certain Nonimmigrant Workers issued on September 19 2025. Applicantsare responsible fordeterminingthe applicability of the fee.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

History Department

The primary responsibility for theapplicantwill be to teach oneupper divisionclass onAncientEgyptianHistorySocietyArchaeologyor Artfor the Department of History.A candidate may design a class of his/her ownthat deals with Ancient the candidate mayalsochooseto teach one of the classes that are already part of the CSUSB curriculum such as Ancient Egyptian Culture and Society Ancient Egyptian Archaeology Ancient Egyptian History Origins to 1700BCE Ancient Egyptian History 1700 BCE to 1000 BCE or Ancient Egyptian History 1000 BCE to thatachieve student learning outcomes byincorporatinghigh impact practices or non-traditional but educational assignments are particularly encouraged. Please specify details aboutthecourseand its designin your application letter.

The candidate will also be a keynote speakerforcommunity-basedeventfocused on Egyptologytypically held at the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art (RAFFMA).

Qualified candidates mustdemonstratea commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student populationandworkeffectively with faculty staffand students across a wide range of disciplines.

Preferred Activities

A successful candidate would also want to be an active member of the CSUSB community and be interested in engaging with RAFFMA. Favorable candidates would also be interested in studying an object(s) in RAFFMA participating in educational projects or assisting with the collections ongoing exhibition.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants musthave a PhD in Egyptologyor a related fieldbyJune 2026or position isopen must alsodemonstratea distinguished record in teaching and research inrelatedfields.

PREFERREDQUALIFICATIONS

The successfulcandidate ideallywould also be able to implement effective teaching strategies for non-traditional andfirst generationstudents.

The person holding this position is considered a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and isrequiredtocomply withthe requirementsset forth inCSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
