Project title: Preserving Vietnamese Languages on Wikipedia: Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Digitization of Language Resources

Project summary: This research project aims to support endangered Vietnamese languages by identifying its level of endangerment and creating a collaborative environment and empowering the community to create edit and manage content on Wikipedia. Research indicates that over 40 indigenous languages are at risk of disappearing. This project will focus on investigating the most severely endangered languages and understanding how Wikipedia can be utilized to preserve these languages. The Active Participatory Approach will collaborate with local communities in northern Vietnam to digitally record at least 10 entries (2 Wikipedia articles for 5 languages)of these languages. Through community workshops this project will help train participants in digital literacy and Wikipedia editing enabling them to contribute by creating articles uploading audio samples and documenting cultural stories in their native languages. The project will result in Wikipedia entries and a research publication. It will also host a Wikistory to share insights and best practices. The anticipated impact will be both local and global empowering communities to preserve their linguistic heritage while contributing to international efforts such as UNESCOs Decade of Indigenous Languages and SDG-4.
