COMPENSATION:

$30.00 per hour

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the supervision of the Director of Operations the part-time Studio Assistant supports the day-to-day operations of a dynamic graduate studio program. This role provides hands-on support across studio administrative and design-related functions and is well-suited for a dependable adaptable individual who is comfortable balancing creative work with practical behind-the-scenes tasks.

The Studio Assistant works closely with students faculty the Director of Operations and the Department Chair. While some responsibilities are routine and detail-oriented the position also offers opportunities for creative contribution and close collaboration within the department. Strong organizational skills attention to detail clear communication and the ability to work proactively and independently are essential to this position.

The innovative MFA Illustration as Visual Essay (MFAI) department established in 1984 is deliberately designed as a full contact program for figurative artists.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support daily studio operations and general program needs.
  • Assist with exhibition planning preparation installation and deinstallation of departmental events.
  • Support admissions activities including interviews information sessions and portfolio reviews.
  • Assist with departmental design needs including posters invitations videos website updates and social media maintenance.
  • In collaboration with the Chair and Director of Operations assist in planning coordinating and promoting external events projects and partnerships (e.g. with Rizzoli Brooklyn Public Library and other cultural institutions).
  • Provide classroom and technical support to faculty.
  • Scan artwork and documents and maintain the department archive.
  • Monitor the MFAI computer lab and troubleshoot basic technical issues.
  • Perform general administrative and organizational tasks as needed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Fine Arts (BFA) or an equivalent combination of relevant education and professional experience.
  • Two (2) or more years of relevant professional experience preferably in a studio arts academic or administrative support environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Google Workspace.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign Illustrator Photoshop and Rush.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or Master of Arts (MA) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Premiere and Final Cut or other video editing software preferred.
  • Experience supporting exhibitions installations or events.
  • Experience with website updates and/or social media content management.
  • Basic technical troubleshooting experience (computer labs scanners printers audiovisual equipment).
  • Interest in contemporary arts illustration visual storytelling or academic arts administration.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of supporting the day-to-day operations of a dynamic graduate studio program.
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign Illustrator Photoshop Premiere Final Cut and Rush.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication
  • Skill using contemporary software and digital tools including platforms with AI-supported features to improve efficiency and workflow.

  • Ability to plan organize and manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to conduct basic research and analyze information to identify trends or underlying issues.
  • Ability to perform manual and hands-on tasks related to studio operations and exhibitions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students faculty staff and external partners.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Schedule: Part-Time (20 hours per week) Monday through Friday (Days TBD). Weekly hours may increase to 3035 during peak event periods.
  • Location: 136 West 21st Street 12th floor New York NY 10011
  • Work is performed on-site in studio classroom and office environments; remote work is not available.
  • Evening and weekend hours may be required to support departmental events programs and initiatives.
  • May require limited local travel between campus buildings or off-site event locations or potentially US or international travel.
  • Ability to work in an office environment at a computer workstation for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift carry and move materials and equipment weighing up to 20-25 pounds.
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs ladders and scaffolding as required for studio and exhibition work
  • Exposure to typical studio conditions including art materials equipment and moderate noise levels.
