Position Summary
As a Packaging Engineer II you will join a fast-paced R&D team developing and maintaining packaging components associated with consumable products used in relation to Automated Endoscope Reprocessors. You will collaborate with other engineering disciplines and cross functional team members during the development lifecycle phases from concept development through final this role you will utilize problem solving techniques and engineering principals such as statics material characteristics mold design material selection and fabrication to develop solutions for medical devices and consumable chemistries used in relation to medical devices. You will be involved in 3D Modeling Design Controls documentation Design Verification Testing and hands-on prototyping while developing new and innovative solutions for our customers. This role requires you to work with multiple manufacturing sites including aseptically filled hazardous and nonhazardous materials.
As a Packaging Engineer II you will identify and propose advanced packaging technologies to better satisfy internal and external customer needs. You will identify and implement as approved packaging development process improvements to increase functional area this role you will also investigate and resolve package problems and complaints and support the interface between packaging and package production equipment to ensure successful packaging implementation and production operations. As a Packaging Engineer II you will function within a World Class Safety culture.
This is a primarily onsite role with the requirement of working at our Plymouth MN location with flexibility for hybrid work as needed.
What Youll do as a Packaging Engineer II
- Conceptualize design develop revise coordinate and implement packaging structures for all products under the authority of STERIS.
- Design and develop packaging components and systems using 3D modeling software and analysis tools employing a design for manufacturability mindset and component manufacturing processes. Role will utilize Creo for packaging modeling and Windchill PLM system.
- Work with Industrial Designer and Mechanical Engineers to create an effective and commercially viable packaging design based on the Voice of the Customer that complements and reverberates the product inside.
- Lead product verification and validation actions and documentation activity.
- Effectively communicate technical information to management and project leadership; preparing polished presentation materials and facilitating discussion.
- Work with internal STERIS and external vendor personnel. Typical contacts include site Directors Managers Project Managers and individual contributors in many functional areas such as Marketing Product Development Purchasing Quality Systems Manufacturing Maintenance Packaging Development contract packagers and packaging manufacturers.
- Function as in-house packaging expert to create packaging for new products as well as evaluate and identify cost out opportunities in existing packaging designs.
- Create technical documents for test protocols SOPs and component specifications reports etc.
- Evaluate and write technical requirements demonstrating adherence to relevant industry standards. Responsible for understanding packaging requirements and shipment regulations for all global regions products are sold into.
- Collaborate with all associated STERIS functional groups such as Marketing Product Development Manufacturing Regulatory Quality Systems Engineering and Purchasing. Packaging must comply with hazardous materials transportation FDA EPA cGMP and ISO regulations and guidelines.
The Experience Skills and Abilities Needed
Required:
- Bachelors degree in Packaging or Mechanical Engineering.
- Minimum 3 years of related engineering or design experience (packaging preferred)
- Excellent Verbal and written communication skills
- Working understanding of project management and project scheduling
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment across various engineering disciplines
- Track record of successful project deliverable execution
- Strong Packaging Engineering Analysis Skills
- Knowledge of advanced 3D modelling and drawing practices
Preferred:
- Computational Modelling experience (FEA CFD etc.)
- Medical Pharmaceutical Liquid or Chemical packaging experience with a knowledge of aseptic packaging technology and materials is desired
- Experience with PLM systems
- Product testing and validation experience
- Experience with 3D component design for manufacturing and design for resin molding
- Understanding of polymer and resin chemistry including the ability to evaluate material compatibility with aggressive liquid chemistries sterilants and long-term exposure conditions.
- Exposure to project management fundamentals

Pay range for this opportunity is $80000.00 - $95000.00. This position is eligible for bonus participation.
