This position is open to Alaska Residents only.

The Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (AOGCC) is currently recruiting for a permanent full-time overtime eligible Petroleum Inspector.

Under general direction the Petroleum Inspector performs fieldwork in the enforcement of Oil and Gas Conservation statutes and regulations to assure the prevention of waste in the exploration development and production of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Inspectors exercise discretion regarding how the AOGCCs inspection goals are achieved by determining which inspections are critical to witness and which inspections can be waived.

An inspector must evaluate and analyze non-repetitive conditions and exercise independent judgment in the application of regulatory decisions affecting continued operations while in the field.

The inspector is responsible for deciding the appropriate method of inspection based on the type of operation or test being conducted and for recommendations to the AOGCC which improve operator compliance with statutes regulations and orders.

The AOGCC is an independent quasi-judicial agency that oversees all oil and gas drilling development and production reservoir depletion and metering operations in the state of Alaska. The AOGCC is responsible for preventing waste protecting correlative rights improving ultimate recovery and protecting underground freshwater as well as serving as an adjudicatory forum for resolving certain oil and gas disputes. The AOGCC carries out statutory mandates consistent with the protection of health safety and the environment and strives for cooperation with industry while maintaining well-defined and essential regulatory requirements.

The working environment you can expect:

The AOGCC Inspectors work is predominately done outside in an oilfield setting that is characterized as arctic and subarctic environments primarily the North Slope and Cook Inlet can occur under hazardous conditions such as inclement weather high pressure hazardous materials confined spaces slippery and uneven surfaces with high levels of noise and moving equipment.

An inspector is away from home and on duty for extended periods of time and must work odd hours. The nature of oilfield operations requires the AOGCC inspection staff to be available 24 hours per day seven days per week including holidays and weekends.

The successful candidate will need:

  • Working knowledge of oil field equipment operations and testing in Alaska specifically:
    • blowout prevention equipment
    • well safety valve systems
    • petroleum measurement systems
    • well integrity requirements
  • Working knowledge of AOGCC statutes and regulations.
  • The ability to work independently to prioritize inspection responsibilities and make immediate regulatory decisions with minimal oversight.
  • The ability to effectively and professionally communicate with others both verbally and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications

(1) high school education and six years hands-on experience in oilfield operations
or
(2) Associate Degree from an accredited vocational school majoring in oilfield drilling and production practices and three years hands-on oilfield experience.

Additional Required Information

Special Notice about this position:This position is in the exempt service. The exempt service is established by statute. Positions are exempt from the provisions of the State Personnel Act and serves at the discretion of the appointing authority. This position is not covered by the terms of a collective bargaining agreement.

  • This position may require frequent travel in Alaska on short notice for extended time frames and to remote locations.
  • A valid drivers license may be required for this position.
