JOB SUMMARY:
The Director of Nursing is responsible for the twenty-four (24) hour planning organizing directing and controlling of the daily operations and clinical practice of their nursing area(s) in order to provide quality individualized patient care to patients ranging from neonate to geriatric on the age continuum (appropriate to their nursing area) and support of the Medical Centers Mission Strategic Plan and Goals and Objectives. The Director of Nursing assumes fiscal responsibility through the unit budgets serves as a liaison with medical staff and other personnel promotes the maximum growth and development of each employee supports nursing research and assures patient advocacy.
1 Clinical Practice
Implements and monitors operational objectives consistent with Facility Mission Strategic Plan and Goals and Objectives.
Monitors patient care management for assigned patient care area.
Conducts evaluative rounds to assure visibility maintain a working knowledge of unit/staff activity assure compliance to Patient Bill of Rights serves as both Patient and Nursing Advocate and collaborates with physicians support services personnel.
Promotes inter/intra-departmental collaboration and communication in the management of clinical practice.
Complies with Universal precautions Hazardous Materials Management Program Infection Control Policies.
Evaluates and implements staff development/education in collaboration with the Clinical Specialists and Staff Nurse IIIs to assure quality nursing care delivery that is based on new technologies trends interventions and research findings.
Develop and implement policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of patient care/services.
Delegate the work associated with a particular responsibility to qualified staff members.
Uses available support services and nursing resources as necessary.
2 Quality Management
Develops evaluates and monitors quality through a formalized process.
Completes Quality Improvement activities on a quarterly basis and submits to Associate Director Nursing Services and the Quality Improvement Committee.
Analyzes data to determine issues/areas for improvement and initiates change with staff input/participation to assure compliance.
Completes safety JCAHO etc. checklists as necessary to assure regulatory/medical center compliance.
Assures that all physicians performing services in the designated unit are current members of the Medical Staff at Facility.
Monitors physician suspensions until cleared by the Medical Records Department.
3 Fiscal Accountability/Productivity
Preparing and monitors unit budgets (wage non-wage capital and revenue) to accomplish fiscal objectives in collaboration with staff.
Develops systems to monitor budgets on an on-going basis and establishes mechanisms to evaluate track and report variances.
Responsible for assuring appropriate quality and quantity of nursing staff to meet patient care requirements and meet productivity/efficiency standards on a bi-weekly basis.
Implements cost containment measures through:
Instilling an attitude in staff of work smarter not harder.
Review historic nursing tasks that are no longer valid and implement changes based on new trends and research findings.
Review/evaluate staff mix and make changes as appropriate to assure cost effective patient care delivery.
Monitors use of overtime supplemental staffing and benefit utilization to determine trends and initiate changes to maintain fiscal compliance.
In collaboration with support departments establishes appropriate supply/equipment levels based on justified need and patient complexity and implements changes as necessary to assure non-wage budget compliance.
Communicates budgetary information to the staff seeking input with the goal of productivity and increase efficiency.
Maintains an awareness of trends/developments in health care systems to assure a competitive edge. Markets new programs and technologies which appeal to physicians managed care organizations patients and Facility.
Monitors cost and recommends changes in systems to ensure budget neutrality. Submits data to the appropriate DON AND and/or Vice President Patient Care Services for approval.
4 Human Resource Management Leadership Professionalism
Demonstrates sound management and leadership principles with all contacts.
Promotes participative management with staff physicians and other personnel to encourage active involvement in unit and patient care decision-making.
Role models professionalism through risk-taking collaborative relationships networking with colleagues problem solving and marketing of self staff and Medical Center.
Demonstrates flexibility adaptability visibility humanism and humor in interactions with all contacts by using sound communication principles.
Conducts all personnel activities in accordance with Facility and Special Care policies and procedures collective bargaining agreements etc.
Functions as both a designer and initiator of controlled change in the work environment. Utilizes organizational and group dynamics to facilitate the change process.
Ensures Values are reflected in carrying out the accountabilities of the position. This involves participating in the annual report of the departments compliance to the values being knowledgeable of the Values and actively communicating the Values to department staff members and clients.
Develops implements and monitors unit operational objectives with staff input which is consistent with policies and procedures Practice Standards and strategic direction of the Medical Center.
Assures compliance to regulatory requirements and standards of professional nursing organizations in policies and procedures.
Establishes/implements/evaluates patient care outcomes in collaboration with staff and physicians and places accountability on all staff to assure attainment of positive patient care outcomes.

Provides timely follow up on patient physician and staff complaints in a non-punitive manner.

5 Staff Development
Facilitates staff development through effective use of both internal and external resources. Assures staff knowledge of education benefits offered by the Medical Center.
Assures staff awareness and compliance to safety standards infection control practices and Universal Precautions and Hazardous Waste Management Program. Seeks opportunities that professional growth of self and staff.
Actively participates in committees task forces and hospital/nursing activities to represent unit staff and professional nursing.
Maintains an open door policy with staff and physicians to assure on-going communication of issues and concerns in order to enhance patient care nursing practice and guest relations.
Conducts and documents routine staff meetings to assure the timely communication of information obtain feedback and assure progress toward goal attainment. Submits minutes to the Vice President Patient Care Services monthly.
Initiates and/or participates in the review and revision of policies and procedures on an on-going basis. Assures staff education of content changes in policies and procedures in a timely fashion.
Demonstrates the ability to negotiate.
Provides employees with on-going feedback regarding behaviors/performance to assure performance ratings are objective and not a surprise.
Completes performance appraisals within 30 days of due date with objective measurable time-limited goals documented for each employee.
In collaboration with the Clinical Specialists and Staff Nurse IIIs (as appropriate) assures orientation of all new employees yearly required training programs and bi-annual BCLS certification.

Maintains CPR certification bi-annually.

Maintains membership in Nursing specialty organization(s).
Qualification/Job Requirements
EDUCATTION:
Bachelors degree in Nursing or equivalent work experience requiredMasters degree in nursing business or heath related field preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Minimum of five (5) years experience required in nursing two years in a management position.
Previous Long-Term Care experience strongly preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
Current CA RN license.
BLS through American Heart Association required.
