Intern, Controls Engineer
Job Summary
Youll work closely with the Controls Engineering Team (CET) and collaborate with ICS security and Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) personnel. This position reports directly to the CET Manager.
Work hours are flexible: up to 20 hours/week during academic semesters and up to 40 hours/week during breaks (MondayFriday 7 a.m.5 p.m.). No weekend or after-hours work is expected.
This internship offers hands-on experience in controls engineering industrial automation ICS/OT operations reliability engineering and ICS cybersecurity. It is ideal for students interested in PLC/HMI (Programmable Logic Controller / Human-Machine Interface) programming automated system design industrial networking reliability planning CMMS workflows and modern ICS/OT systems.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Support troubleshooting testing and documentation of ICS/OT systems.
- Assist in updating control sequences configurations and networking components.
- Contribute to ICS cybersecurity testing and control validation.
- Maintain ICS asset records and reliability/maintenance documentation in Maximo.
- Assist with technical documentation and project coordination.
- Perform other duties as needed.
What Youll Bring
- Currently enrolled at the University of Iowa or Kirkwood Community College in a relevant engineering or applied engineering technology program such as Computer Science & Engineering Electrical Engineering Industrial Engineering Mechanical Engineering Electronics Engineering Technology Industrial Automation or Industrial Maintenance
- Computer Science students may be considered with relevant project or coursework experience.
- No prior professional experience is required.
- Have an interest in control systems PLCs/HMIs automation instrumentation industrial networking reliability/asset management or ICS security.
- Willingness to learn Maximo IEC 611313 programming and industrial communication protocols.
- Strong troubleshooting communication and safety awareness.
Additional Details
- Interns must be enrolled students in good standing at the commencement of the intern semester.
- Onsite attendance required (2040 hours/week depending on academic schedule).
- Valid U.S. drivers license with a clean driving record (may involve use of a company vehicle).
- Ability to climb stairs/ladders lift up to 50 lbs and wear required PPE.
- Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
Compensation
Hourly Range: $22.50 - $32.00 USD hourly
This represents the average expected pay range for a qualified candidate.
