QualificationsThe Director of Nursing (DON) provides strategic and operational leadership for all nursing services within the correctional healthcare setting. This role is responsible for ensuring safe compliant and high-quality nursing care for the incarcerated population while leading developing and holding nursing staff accountable in a highly structured security-driven environment.
The DON works collaboratively with the HSA Medical Provider Mental Health leadership and custody partners to ensure integrated patient-centered care that meets regulatory contractual and clinical standards.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and oversee all nursing operations including staffing scheduling performance management and clinical oversight
Ensure compliance with state nursing standards NCCHC/ACA guidelines (if applicable) and contract requirements
Provide direct supervision coaching and professional development for nursing leadership and staff
Serve as the primary nursing authority for clinical decision-making policy implementation and quality improvement initiatives
Collaborate with medical and mental health leadership to support continuity of care and interdisciplinary coordination
Monitor clinical outcomes incident reports audits and corrective action plans
Maintain readiness for inspections surveys and regulatory reviews
Address operational challenges unique to the correctional environment including security protocols staffing shortages and acuity fluctuations
Required Qualifications
Associates degree in Nursing (ADN) required
(Bachelors degree in Nursing (BSN) strongly preferred)
Active unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license
Current CPR certification
Minimum 35 years of nursing leadership experience
(Correctional acute care or high-acuity environment preferred)
Demonstrated ability to lead teams in structured compliance-driven settings
Preferred Experience
Prior correctional healthcare experience
Experience managing staffing models schedules and on-call rotations
Experience with audits surveys and performance improvement initiatives
