Job Summary

Title: Paraprofessional A - SOAR

Category:Classified

Reports to:Site or Program Administrator

Purpose: To assist in the instruction and care students with special needs in the general education and self-contained classroom to meet goals set in each childs Individual Education Program plan. To assist the special education teacher in meeting the special needs of students with IEPs as outlined by the team.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must obtain and maintain a AZ DPS IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card(required).
  • High School diploma or equivalent (required).
  • First Aid/CPR Certificationand AED is required upon hire or obtain the certification within 30 day of employment (in-person hands on training/certificaterequired).
  • Ability to speak fluent Spanish(preferred)
  • Obtain and maintain certification in Nonviolent Physical Crisis Intervention(preferred).
  • Excellent communication skills (written or oral).
  • Experience working with school-age children.
  • Experience working with children with severe needs.
  • Professional development history which shows knowledge concerning students with severe needs.
  • Experience with working with students in various levels of instruction.
  • Experience working in a reading intervention classroom is a plus
  • Computer skills in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel and student data systems.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:(Essential functions as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act may include any of the following tasks knowledge skills and other characteristics.   1. Assist teachers in the administration delivery and evaluation of the student instruction aligning all activities assignments and interventions with Arizona Academic Standards in accordance with a childs IEP.

  2. Perform duties as determined by the team which can include daily living skills behavioral interventions and schedule implementation.

  3. Is trained in and uses district approved de-escalation and restraint protocols.

  4. Interprets students needs and progress of students to the classroom teachers and the special education teacher.

  5. Assist teachers in preparing for and conducting in-service workshops and demonstrations pertinent to methods and materials appropriate to various educational levels.

  6. Provides collaborative support in the classroom assisting teachers with the needs of their students with IEPs.

  7. Assist teachers in the planning of academically appropriate assignments for individual students in a one-on-one or small group setting.

  8. Assist with the development of special instructional programs for students with special needs.

  9. Participates in professional development to effectively work perform duties which are necessary for students with more severe needs (i.e. daily living skills behavioral interventions feeding toileting and medical protocol).

  10. Consults frequently with the teachers about the needs suggestions questions problems

    and IEPs.

  11. Assists teachers with preparation of instructional materials.

  12. Responds to new ideas methods and suggestions from teachers.

  13. Demonstrates professional and flexible attitude/rapport with other staff members.

  14. Demonstrates appropriate interaction with the students in the classroom.

  15. Encourage students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior and assists the teachers in maintaining classroom discipline and control.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to talk and hear to use hands to handle or feel objects or controls. The employee occasionally is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to sit stand walk stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to ten pounds and occasionally lift/or move up to fifty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must regularly move about a classroom to monitor students and work closely with them in an variety of settings( on carpet at the playground).

EVALUATION:

Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of support staff personnel.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

FY: 2026-2027

Non-Exempt 10 month position 186 days

Base Salary:$17.09/hr $0.25 per year of equivalent experience

38.50 hours/wk.

Participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS)
