Test Engineer

Primary Function of Position:

The R&D group within Intuitive Surgical is searching for a test engineer with a focus on the development of advanced products contributing to the exploration of a novel system concept and optimization of established system concepts for a new application of surgical diagnostic and therapeutic robotics. This role is an exciting opportunity to join a small and innovative team focused on successful implementation of product development.

The Advanced Product Development team at Intuitive is a cross-functional team dedicated to the creation of innovative medical robotic tools and technologies. We create transformational technologies to address the major pain points and unmet needs in our healthcare system.

The Mechanical Engineer will focus on the development of systems for minimally invasive applications. The Test Engineer will work with a team of dedicated individuals within a product development team to assure the quality of new designs to identify issues related to new designs and processes and to work with other Test Engineers to develop harmonized test methods. They must excel in a high-energy focused small-team environment and have a commitment to high quality prototypes. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.

Essential Job Duties 

Test Fixture Development

• Designs test fixtures test scripts and other test aids needed to perform Design Verification Labeling and Life/Reliability tests
• Works with other engineers to develop concepts and approaches to fixture designs
• Responsible for documentation of fixtures utilizing SolidWorks including release of documents into Agile (document control system)

Other Responsibilities

• Ensures successful on-time completion of department projects and labs; communicates constraints to direct management when successful project completion is at risk
• Performs a broad variety of tasks in support of product verification and test process design as assigned by department management
• Complies with company Department and Standard Operating Procedures
• Verifies and ensures adequate supply of test articles and other equipment or material

Qualifications :

Required Skills and Experience 

• Familiarity with equipment needed to perform typical performance measurements on electro-mechanical systems.
• Some basic knowledge of electrical systems test equipment and test practices.
• Experience in advanced product development creating clinical models

• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees supervisors or engineers

• Ability to work with biological samples including blood tissue and organs
• Familiar with GDP.

Required Education and Training

• Minimum BS Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or a similar degree
• Some coursework and/or prior experience in electro-mechanical engineering along with work experience in an engineering organization
• Experience working in a medical device company is preferred

Working Conditions 

• Must be able to lift carry and move 50 lbs.
• Routinely lifts carries and moves 10lbs.

Preferred Skills and Experience 

• Experience using tools and measuring equipment (Force Gauge Calipers Instron Oscilloscopes etc.)
• Experience with electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes signal generators power supplies and embedded systems is a plus
• Knowledge of Matlab Python Arduino is a plus
• Experience with Solidworks or similar CAD is highly preferred

We provide market-competitive compensation packages inclusive of base pay incentives benefits and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role as actual pay will be determined based on several factors including experience skills and qualifications. The target compensation ranges are listed.
