Job Title: Medical Technician (Phlebotomist)

Duration: 6 months with option to extend in accordance with contract terms
Shift Schedule: Day shifts between 5:30 AM and 5:00 PM (8-hour shifts) based on laboratory needs. May include weekends holidays and occasional overtime. No on-call or standby required.
Credentialing / Onboarding time: 6 weeks to 8 weeks
How many shifts needed per month: Full-time coverage equivalent to 5 FTE. Approx. 40 hours per week per FTE. Maximum 120 workdays per phlebotomist per period (Title 5 limitation)
Total estimated hours:
- 4800 hours (Base)
- 4800 hours (Option)
Certifications:
- National Phlebotomy Certification preferred (ASCP AMT NHA or equivalent).
- BLS required.
Experience needed: Minimum three (3) years of recent phlebotomy experience
Special Skills needed:
- Inpatient and outpatient phlebotomy
- Emergency Department (ED) STAT ASAP and timed draws
- Specimen collection labeling processing and send-out preparation
- Positive patient identification procedures
- Information security compliance (HIPAA & VA Privacy)
- Ability to work independently across multiple lab areas
- Strong customer service and patient-centered care skills
- English fluency (read write speak understand)
Responsibilities:
- Perform inpatient ward rounds and outpatient blood draws
- Conduct ED STAT ASAP and timed specimen collections
- Process and prepare specimens for send-out testing
- Ensure accurate patient and specimen identification
- Maintain confidentiality and safeguard patient information
- Document care in VA electronic health record
- Participate in laboratory Quality Improvement (QI) meetings
- Report patient safety incidents within required timelines
- Comply with VA policies directives and infection control standards
- Attend required VA training (Privacy HIPAA Records Management)
