This position currently qualifies for a hybrid telework option with routine office and remote workday. The NC Department of Insurance trusts our employees to be self-motivated and successful in hybrid/remote roles. Telework options are subject to change at the discretion of management.

For more information about NCDOI: Purpose of the Position:

The purpose of this position is to provide administrative support for the North Carolina Firefighters Cancer Insurance Program within the Office of State Fire Marshal. This position assists with processing claims and verifying documentation to ensure eligible firefighters and their families receive timely and accurate benefits as provided under state law. The position manages the program operations by maintaining accurate records preparing correspondence and assisting with the implementation of procedures in accordance with statutory requirements. The position oversees contact with fire departments firefighters and other stakeholders to provide clear and courteous communication regarding program information and status updates. This role assists with tracking program metrics and compiling data reports to support program evaluation and continuous improvement contributing to the effective delivery of benefits and the well-being of North Carolinas firefighters and their families.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Effective July 1 2025 candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge skills and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

Management Preferences:

  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of public and business administration.
  • Considerable knowledge of human resources purchasing budget and accounting practices and procedures as related to the program area of assignment.
  • Skill in program analysis and evaluation.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates other State officials and the general public.

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of program experience related to the area of assignment including one year of supervisory program experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
