JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Martins Precision Dairy Nutrition Laboratory led by Dr. Leoni F. Martins in the Department of Animal Science at The Pennsylvania State University seeks a motivated and detail-oriented Part-Time Research Assistant to support laboratory data and field research in precision dairy nutrition.

This position provides hands-on experience with advanced analytical and data-driven approaches to study dairy cattle nutrition with special emphasis on metabolizable protein supply amino acid nutrition and nutrient use efficiency in dairy cows. The successful candidate will contribute to research projects that integrate laboratory analyses on-farm data and precision feeding strategies to improve productivity economic performance and environmental sustainability of dairy production systems.

Responsibilities

  • Collecting processing and analyzing feed and milk samples from research trials and commercial dairy farms.

  • Conducting laboratory analyses for the determination of nutrient composition in feedstuffs nutrient digestibility and urinary excretion in dairy cows

  • Running colorimetric and enzymatic assays to support nutritional evaluation and laboratory calibration.

  • Assisting graduate students and research personnel with on-farm sample collection and data recording.

  • Compiling results maintaining detailed laboratory records and performing basic statistical and data analyses.

  • Ensuring organization calibration and cleanliness of laboratory and research spaces.

Qualifications

  • Strong attention to detail excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Prior laboratory experience in analytical chemistry dairy nutrition or animal science preferred especially experience with protein and fatty acid analysis.

  • Familiarity with wet chemistry techniques and spectrophotometric methods is desirable.

  • Possess a valid U.S. drivers license and be willing to travel for on-farm sampling preferred.

  • Employment requires successful completion of a motor vehicle record check and standard background checks in accordance with Penn State policies.

Additional Information

This is a part-time position located in the Martins Precision Dairy Nutrition Laboratory Department of Animal Science University Park PA. Work hours are flexible but require regular in-person presence. Occasional travel to dairy farms for sample collection is expected.
