Job Summary

This is a paid internship range of $22/hr - $39/hr (depending on role and qualifications) for those currently pursuing undergraduate degrees and higher rates for those currently pursuing graduate level degrees.

Tentative 2026 Internship Dates:

  • Semester students: May 18th to July 24th

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Sound Transits Enterprise Safety team within the Agency Oversight department drives impartial analysis reporting and governance while fostering strong connections across the agency. This supports holistic decision-making and continuous improvement in service to our riders our communities and the agency at large. The Safety Promotion intern will work alongside the Safety Culture and Programs team and learn how safety promotion and safety culture initiatives are developed coordinated and implemented across a large regional transit system.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional position-specific duties.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Support the Safety Culture and Programs team in planning developing implementing Safety Promotion programs projects surveys and related process improvements.
  • Assists with preparing compiling and organizing data and information to support decision-making related to Safety Promotion initiatives including survey content and implementation.
  • Support development of communications materials including content development presentations program overviews special reports etc.
  • Support coordination of resources and development and review of materials for Safety Promotion events.
  • Assists in coordinating availability of resources and maintains schedules for various Safety Promotion campaigns and initiatives.
  • Research regulations guidelines and industry best practices and support the team in identifying opportunities to improve Safety Promotion materials.

POTENTIAL PROJECTS:

  • Support planning development and day-of implementation for safety promotion initiatives including the Safety Fair and Safety Summit.
  • Support planning and development of communications materials for additional safety initiatives (e.g. Safety Culture Survey Rail Safety Week Suicide Prevention and other safety awareness efforts).
  • Participate in early planning and design of safety promotion initiatives in support of SMS Implementation including coordination and development of communications approaches.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must be a current college student in good academic standing enrolled in an accredited associate bachelors or graduate degree program in Safety Science Engineering Communications Occupational Health and Safety or other non-technical discipline or relevant two-year certificate.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to collaborate and work across teams.
  • Organizational and detail oriented able to manage multiple tasks.
  • Takes initiative and brings creative ideas forward.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong oral and written communications skills.
  • Interest in public transportation.
  • Interest in public-sector communications safety messaging or outreach.
  • Experience or interest in event planning campaigns or stakeholder coordination.
  • Project Management skills.
  • MS Office and Adobe experience.
  • Willingness to learn.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work is performed in a standard office environment.
  • Subject to standing walking bending reaching stooping and lifting of objects up to 25 pounds; may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery when visiting job sites during construction and when working in the field.
