Job Summary

The OB Technician assists in obstetric and surgical procedures acting as a scrub person and handling instruments supplies and equipment necessary for cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries. This role plays a key part in ensuring a sterile environment preparing for procedures and supporting obstetric teams in providing safe and high-quality patient care. The OB Technician collaborates with nurses physicians and surgical staff assisting in preoperative intraoperative and postoperative tasks.

Essential Functions

  • Maintains sterile and aseptic technique ensuring proper gowning gloving and draping of surgeons and assistants.
  • Prepares the surgical field for cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries organizing and maintaining instruments equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of step-by-step obstetric procedures anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical team.
  • Monitors and ensures proper handling of surgical instruments sponges needles and supplies adhering to safety protocols and performing required counts.
  • Assists with patient positioning and room preparation ensuring proper setup for obstetric and gynecological procedures.
  • Handles and properly labels specimens ensuring compliance with hospital policies and laboratory standards.
  • Operates cleans and processes surgical and obstetric equipment following proper sterilization and disinfection protocols.
  • Performs errands to pharmacy lab and diagnostic imaging departments ensuring timely delivery of necessary supplies and specimens.
  • Follows Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and facility standards adhering to best practices for infection control and patient safety.
  • Assists in maintaining unit supplies and equipment ensuring availability for emergency and scheduled procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.

Qualifications

  • Technical School completion of a Surgical Technician or OB Technician training program required
  • 0-1 years of experience as an OB Technician Surgical Technician or in a related healthcare role required
  • 1-2 years of experience in labor and delivery obstetric surgery or womens health services preferred

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in obstetric and surgical procedures including sterile technique instrument handling and patient positioning.
  • Strong knowledge of infection control sterilization and disinfection processes for obstetric and surgical equipment.
  • Ability to anticipate surgical team needs ensuring smooth and efficient procedural flow.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills collaborating with physicians nurses and surgical staff.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols including proper specimen handling equipment operation and surgical counts.
  • Knowledge of AORN and hospital policies related to obstetric and surgical procedures.

Licenses and Certifications

  • BCLS - Basic Life Support required
  • CST - Certified Surgical Technologist preferred
