Job Summary
The Mammography Technologist I is responsible for performing screening and diagnostic mammography procedures to assist in the detection and diagnosis of breast diseases. This role requires a high level of technical proficiency adherence to safety protocols and a commitment to patient-centered care. The Mammography Technologist I works collaboratively with Radiologists and other healthcare professionals ensuring accurate imaging and patient comfort while maintaining compliance with state federal and regulatory standards including FDA/MQSA and ACR requirements.
Essential Functions
- Performs mammography imaging procedures ensuring high-quality screening and diagnostic images through proper positioning technique and compression.
- Adheres to safety protocols radiation protection standards and infection control guidelines to ensure patient and staff safety.
- Ensures equipment functionality and maintenance performing routine quality control testing per ACR and FDA/MQSA requirements.
- Reviews physician orders and patient history ensuring all mammography procedures are correctly ordered verified and acknowledged.
- Educates patients on breast health self-exam techniques and procedure expectations addressing concerns with professionalism.
- Assists radiologists with specialized mammography procedures including fine needle aspiration (FNA) needle localizations and biopsies while maintaining sterile technique.
- Prepares patients for invasive mammography-guided procedures providing clear instructions and post-procedure care guidance.
- Maintains accurate documentation and image storage as required by state federal and accreditation regulations.
- Manages mammography inventory and supplies ensuring cost-effective use and proper stock levels for daily operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- 1-3 years of experience in radiologic imaging required
- 2-4 years experience as a mammographer in an acute care hospital setting preferred
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in mammographic positioning imaging techniques and radiation safety standards.
- Strong understanding of FDA/MQSA ACR and state regulatory compliance requirements for mammography.
- Ability to effectively communicate and provide patient education with empathy and professionalism.
- Knowledge of aseptic and surgical techniques for mammography-guided procedures.
- Attention to detail in documenting patient information reports and image storage requirements.
- Proficiency in PACS electronic medical records (EMR) and mammography equipment operation.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills in technical troubleshooting and patient care situations.
Licenses and Certifications
- Licensed Radiologic Technologist as applicable by state required
- ARRT Radiography Certification required and
- (M) ARDMS or ARRT - Mammography certification or eligibility to obtain within six (6) months of hire required
- BCLS - Basic Life Support required
