Job Summary

Deputy General Counsel - Regulatory

Trupanion is seeking a highly motivated and experienced insurance regulatory attorney to join a fast-paced environment to help grow our Company and the medical insurance for pets category.  

In this role you will be an integral part of leading our Regulatory and Compliance Team and your responsibilities will include managing state regulatory insurance relationships partnering with our business to develop new products overseeing governance for our insurance companies and advising the Company on regulatory and compliance issues primarily from an insurance perspective. You will serve as the legal bridge between product strategy and regulatory execution translating business ideas into compliant scalable solutions. The ideal candidate has extensive experience in property and casualty (P&C) insurance is business-oriented and thrives in a dynamic and collaborative setting.

This position is open to candidates throughout the United States with career advancement opportunities upon relocation to Seattle Washington. 

Key Responsibilities include:  

  • Partnering with U.S. insurance regulators on regulatory matters including inquiries market conduct examinations and financial examinations 
  • Further enhancing strong relationships with U.S. regulators 
  • Lead a team of regulatory attorneys and compliance professionals
  • Collaborate with our actuarial and finance teams to design and file new products product changes and financial statements 
  • Ensuring compliance with applicable federal and state insurance laws and regulations 
  • Oversee team licensing individuals and entities 
  • Assisting with audits both internally and of our business partners 
  • Partnering with business owners to design and implement business initiatives in a fully compliant manner that achieves the companys objectives
  • Overseeing governance for insurance companies (underwriters and agencies)

What were looking for:

  • Minimum of 10 years of regulatory and compliance experience in the property and casualty insurance industry 
  • A law degree from a highly reputable institution
  • Prior experience engaging effectively with insurance regulators 
  • Ability to fit into a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment 
  • Ability to collaborate with executives and department leaders
  • Ability to demonstrate sound and practical business judgment with speed and sometimes in ambiguous situations 
  • Ability to articulate complex insurance regulatory concepts and risk to leaders across the company and our external business partners

  • Youre a strategic thinker who can proactively identify assess and clearly articulate regulatory risks to assist the business in moving forward thoughtfully and expeditiously 
  • You are highly knowledgeable of and familiar with insurance regulations

  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills

Compensation: 

  • The base pay range for this position is $225000 - $275000 depending on experience and qualifications. 
  • Along with base salary you will be eligible for monthly bonuses based on performance against personal and company goals. 
  • Significant equity will be granted depending on experience and qualifications in the form of Restricted Stock Units that vest over 4 years.
