About the Role
Prosperity Workforce Solutions is seeking an experienced Mental Health Nurse (RN or RPN) to join a multidisciplinary outpatient mental health team in Halifax NS. This role focuses on delivering evidence-based mental health care to adult clients with an emphasis on operational trauma occupational mental health and deployment-related care.
This is a specialized role with strict experience and education requirements. Only candidates who clearly meet the criteria below will be considered.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive bio-psychosocial assessments and develop individualized treatment plans
- Deliver direct mental health care aligned with DSM-V diagnoses
- Provide psychotherapy and counselling using:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Solution-Focused Therapy
- Strengths-Based approaches
- Motivational Interviewing
- Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation for clients in acute distress
- Monitor client progress and adjust care plans based on outcomes
- Design and facilitate psycho-educational programs (individual and group)
- Provide medication monitoring education and therapeutic follow-up
- Conduct pre-deployment and post-deployment health assessments
- Provide clinical recommendations related to workplace or employment limitations
- Participate in interdisciplinary case conferences and care planning
- Liaise with internal teams and external healthcare providers
- Support mental health outreach and awareness initiatives
Mandatory Experience Requirements (Non-Negotiable)
- Minimum 3 years of consecutive mental health / psychiatric nursing experience within the last 5 years. Experience must be recent and continuous with no significant gaps
- Must be in a mental health psychiatric or community mental health setting
- Minimum 3 years of experience working primarily with adult populations. Must be in an adult mental health or community mental health environment
- Demonstrated experience with at least ONE of the following therapeutic modalities:
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Psychotherapy
- Solution-Focused Therapy
- Proven experience in:
- Crisis intervention
- De-escalation techniques
- Managing acute mental health presentations
Mandatory Education Requirements
Candidates must meet ONE of the following pathways:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
PLUS - A Certificate in Mental Health Nursing
OR - CNA Certification in Psychiatric & Mental Health Nursing
OR
- Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (BScPN) or equivalent
OR
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)
PLUS - A Diploma in Psychiatric Nursing
Licensure & Certifications (Required)
- Current RN or RPN license in Nova Scotia (or eligibility to obtain)
- BLS / CPR-AED Level C (Healthcare Provider)

Hourly Rate: $60.90
Contract: End date: March 2027 but Calian renews contracts annually. No end date will be put on the offer letter.
Location: Work on a military base (DND Department of National Defense)
Population: military members (18) adults only just coming off frontline goal is to get them back to the field or go home

Team: Large multidisciplinary team. The Mental Health Team consists of psychiatrists clinical psychologists mental health nurses clinical social workers and addictions counsellors. Team size is 30-40 on average.
Staffing & Team Coverage: Staffing levels vary by clinic. Typically 1-3 MH nurses are working per shift. Nurses work closely alongside a multidisciplinary mental health team.
Reporting Structure: MH Nurses report to the MH Manager on a day-to-day larger clinics nurses may also report to a Team Lead depending on the service area. Most nurses work within the Psychosocial Team supporting a wide range of MH concerns that typically resolve within approx 10 sessions. Nurses with advanced trauma-focused training (EMDR CPT PE) may also support general MH teams operational trauma and stress support centres (OTSSC) which are physician-referral only.
Client Appointments & Workflow: The clinic operates both scheduled appointments and walk-in/crisis services. MH nurses participate in a walk-in/crisis model particularly during the first few hours the clinic is open each day. Designated appointment blocks are reserved daily for: crisis presentations walk-ins self-referrals. A rotating Duty Day system is in place where one MH nurse is assigned as the primary crisis support for that day.
Orientation & Training: All orientation and training is paid and completed on-site. MH nurses complete mandatory training modules in the CFHIS the EMR system developed specifically for the Canadian Armed Forces. Training includes: EMR modules policy and procedure review and job shadowing experienced clinicians. Onboarding is intentionally paced allowing nurses to fully orient before carrying a caseload. Nurses are not rushed into seeing patients.
Crisis Support & De-Escalation Process: To ensure adequate staffing and safe patient transitions: Clinics do not accept new patients within 30 mins of closing. If a patient requires escalation to inpatient care: The MH team collaborates to facilitate referral to the local hospital. Each clinic follows a defined crisis protocol. Detailed site-specific processes are reviewed during the site visit which occurs: After a candidate is formally submitted to DND and/or in conjunction with an in-person meeting with Calian contract manager who will provide ongoing support once hired.
Their onsite parking cost is now $130 per month and only available to full-time employees.
