Description of Work
INTERNAL POSTING-only temporary or permanent NC state government employees or layoff candidates with the State of North Carolina eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126May ApplyThe Deputy Marketing & Communications Director will supervise the day-to-day operations of the NCDOT Communications office reporting to the Director of Communications. This position leads the communication staff ranging from entry-level to senior-level positions.
The managerial responsibilities of the Deputy Marketing & Communications Director include delegation oversight and approval of short- and long-term assignments proofing and editing of written and online work providing creative and technical guidance for marketing campaigns from conception to execution and various personnel functions including performance measures interviewing and hiring for vacant positions and disciplinary action.
This position understands and supports the goals and commitments of NCDOT so they can be effectively communicated internally and externally through available mediums. This position has a strong working knowledge of the departments operations and an ability to synthesize complex information so it can be understood by a variety of audiences.
This position holds multiple responsibilities under tight deadlines and maintains professional working relationships with individuals both inside and outside of the department. Must think strategically and work during crisis situations.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences
Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC21 $70627 - $137724
Management prefers applicants with the following:
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and methods of planning and conducting a large-scale public relations program.
- Considerable knowledge of journalistic principles and techniques for disseminating information to the public through a variety of media.
- Demonstrated ability to supervise a staff of subordinates in the preparation of written communications film processing layout techniques and media contacts.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise mature judgment in appraising and analyzing situations and making sound decisions.
- Demonstrated ability to write according to correct English usage and accepted standards for media and press publications.
Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelors degree in communications public relations public affairs media journalism English or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of experience in communications public relations or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.EEO Statement
