Description of Work

The North Carolina Aquariums at Roanoke Island is seeking a dynamic efficient and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a General Utility Worker. This position reports to the Building Superintendent and is responsible for maintaining the building exhibits and grounds of the aquarium in a clean and operating manner.
Key Responsibilities:
Cleaning floors walls offices and public areas. This includes restrooms for staff and public food service areas teaching labs gift shops auditorium courtyards admissions area husbandry quarantine and holding areas and the natural habitat area (greenhouse)
Routine cleaning of all windows doors exhibits etc.
Removing trash from public and staff containers
Cleaning furniture and fixtures in office and work areas
Grounds maintenance tasks including mowing trimming mulching raking planting pruning and watering of plants
Maintaining and cleaning state vehicles
Setting up rooms conferences for public and private meetings and events both inside and outside of the facility
Conducting minor maintenance and repairs on the facility and grounds including unclogging drains replacing fixtures and bulbs sanding and painting walls and exhibits laying carpet and tile and other repair needs.

Recruitment Range: $31200 - $36327

Candidates meet the minimum qualifications of this position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed onthe vacancy announcement. Vacancy specific knowledge skills and abilities (KSAs) and/or management preferences are notrequired. Applicants who possess the following are preferred:

  • Experience operating basic electrical power tools and/or carpentry hand tools.
  • Experience cleaning (such as office business or commercial cleaning).

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Weekend evening and holiday work will be required.
  • Recommended candidate will be subject to a background check prior to hiring.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

The North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Islandis located in Manteo NC nine miles from the Atlantic coastline in Nags Head. The 61000 square-foot facility is sited on 16 acres overlooking the Croatan Sound and houses over 2200 animals. More than 280000 guests visit the aquarium each year to see a large array of sharks learn about sea turtle conservation participate in a variety of programs enjoy the beauty of the area and learn why North Carolinas waterways are so special.
