Ready for outdoor work where every cut makes a visible difference TheDepartment of Parks and Recreation (DPR)Division of Urban Forestryis looking for a tree-loving and hardworking Tree Trimmer-Heavy Truck Driver!This full-time permanentrole located in Honolulu involves operating dump or bucket trucks and doing tree work such as pruning trimming palms removing or moving trees planting shaping and cleaning up during and after tree maintenance.

What You Will Do
  • Remove and prune trees and branches (including palms and fronds) to support public safety tree health and appearance using approved tools and required safety equipment and clean up and load debris onto trucks.
  • Operate heavy trucks and equipment (including dump trucks boom trucks bucket trucks stump grinders and brush chippers) to support tree maintenance and removal including hauling debris to disposal sites.
  • Maintain professional and courteous public interaction by addressing complaints answering questions helping set up traffic control and safety devices requesting towing of illegally parked vehicles when needed and directing vehicle and pedestrian traffic to ensure a safe work area.
  • Maintain chainsaws equipment and assigned truck by performing daily inspections cleaning as needed reporting issues to a supervisor and securing tools properly after each workday.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs during evenings weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Report accidents injuries equipment issues unsafe conditions and license-related matters as required and participate in training and temporary assignments.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.
Special Working Conditions
  • Work schedule is Monday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
  • May be required to respond to emergency work in all weather conditions including extreme or inclement weather working near or under fallen trees traffic or downed power lines and navigating off-road or low-visibility conditions.
  • May work overtime evenings weekends and holidays based on operational needs.
  • This position will serve as a Disaster Response worker during declared emergencies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to show competence in the care and maintenance of grounds and landscaped areas including the trimming pruning and care of trees and shrubs andsome truck driving.

Must be able to:

  • Apply tree trimming techniques and practices
  • Identify common shade and ornamental trees and their growth habits
  • Recognize and address common tree diseases and infestations
  • Perform tree surgery and safely use insecticides fungicides and fertilizers
  • Safely care for and operate hand and power tools used in tree trimming
  • Follow safety equipment requirements practices and procedures applicable to the work
  • Climb trees with or without spikes and work safely at varying heights.
  • Diagnose and treat conditions harmful to trees
  • Operate heavy trucks and other motorized equipment skillfully and safely
  • Recognize mechanical and operational defects in equipment and perform minor emergency repairs
  • Follow safety practices especially those related to heights and electrical hazards

LICENSE/CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:
At Time of Application:
  1. Valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or B.
  2. Current State Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examination Certificate.

Verification Requirement: You must submit a copy of your CDL Class B or higher as well as your current State Department of Transportation Medical Examiners Certificate in order to be given credit. Please attach an electronic copy of your CDL license and DOT medical examiners certificate to your application. Prior to Completion of Probation:
  1. Current Certified Arborist or Tree Worker (International Society of Arboriculture) certificate.
  2. Obtain and maintain current First Aid/CPR and AED certificates.
  3. Obtain Forklift Certification.
NOTE: The above certificates and licenses must be obtained by the time indicated and maintained on a current basis thereafter as a condition of employment.
