Position Overview:
Under supervision of the School Principal a Student Monitor performs a variety of non-teaching duties requiring the exercise
of good judgment and the ability to get along well with children. The Student Monitor is responsible for the supervision of
students in the cafeteria hallways/walkways restrooms and on school grounds and playgrounds to ensure proper student
behavior and safety. The Student Monitors work requires the ability to maintain discipline among students in a courteous
but firm manner as well as to assist and support with individual behavior management. Regular attendance is necessary to
perform the essential functions of this position.

Essential Duties and Job Responsibilities


A. Supervision of Students

  1. Supervise students before/after school during lunch at recess hallways/walkways school grounds and playgrounds to ensure proper behavior from students.
  2. Monitor students in the cafeteria waiting in line while eating and ensuring all students have something to eat.
  3. Monitor restrooms and report any inappropriate activities or unauthorized personnel.
  4. Maintain a calm and disciplined atmosphere on the outside grounds in the cafeteria walkways/hallways and bus lines.

B. Student Discipline

  1. Monitor detention/ISS when necessary.
  2. Assist principal in enforcing school and district rules regulations and policies regarding student discipline.
  3. Assign behavioral interventions to low level incidents.
  4. Assist in resolving conflicts and problem situations between students.
  5. Detain students for alleged misconduct and delivers students to principal or principal designee.

C. Bus

  1. Monitor students awaiting school bus transportation maintaining a safe and controlled environment.
  2. Help supervise buses loading and unloading.
  3. Inform administration of late buses.

D. Safety

  1. Ensure safety of students under all conditions.
  2. Monitors all non-school personnel and directs them to the office or off the school premises.
  3. Escort students and visitors to designated location as needed.
  4. Administer first aid for the purpose of providing immediate non-emergency care.
  5. Monitor students during assigned periods lunch and recess and within a variety of school environments (e.g. restrooms playgrounds walkways/hallways classrooms bus stops cafeteria etc.) for the purpose of providing for the safety and welfare of students.
  6. Assist students injured during campus activities by immediate notification to supervisory certified personnel.

E. Communication

  1. Maintain radio communication with school personnel.
  2. Report observations and incidents relating to specific students (e.g. discipline accidents inappropriate social behavior violations of campus rules etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to teachers and/or administration.

F. Miscellaneous

  1. May occasionally perform miscellaneous manual clerical duties such as filing sorting data collecting organizing materials and answering phones.
  2. Facilitates games among students for the purpose of providing age appropriate activities.
  3. Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment as assigned by the School Principal.

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Coursework in child development preferred.

Licenses or Certifications

  • A valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
  • CPR and First Aid Certificates preferred.

Experience

  • Experience working with school age children preferably in a multicultural setting preferred.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Skill in providing direction suggestion and encouragement to students.
  • Possesses knowledge and common-sense regarding safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to oversee and control a large number of children.
  • Ability to monitor and control student behavior and activity during lunchtime recess or other areas.
  • Ability to be equitable and fair and to work patiently and calmly with children.
  • Ability to react quickly calmly and appropriately during emergency situations.
  • Ability to work independently within scope of authority.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding all student parent or staff matters and issues.
  • Ability to gain the respect and confidence of students through the modeling of appropriate behavior.
  • Ability to maintain punctual and regular attendance.

Working Environment

  • The work environment is a normal school setting; the noise level ranges from quiet to loud but is usually moderate.
  • The playground setting can include exposure to dirt dust and extreme seasonal temperatures.
  • Performing the job duties of this position requires the following physical demands: reaching some lifting standing walking carrying bending stooping kneeling crouching sitting and/or crawling.

Terms of Employment

  • Nine-months At-Will hourly; benefits in accordance with Governing Board policies.
