JOB SUMMARY

Acts as a resource to the Manager Nursing Staff and Health Team members by coordinating patient care activities and communicating patient information to the appropriate individuals.

Through clinical educational administrative and research roles the Supervisor Clinical Nursing is accountable for their actions in the delivery of patient care. They provide nursing care to a patient population using the nursing process which entails assessment diagnostic formulation planning implementation and evaluation of nursing care.

Is required to maintain an extensive and diverse knowledge base flexibility in practice and the need to be adaptable to changes in technology legislation and nursing practice. Incorporates ethical and legal requirements in their professional practice as a member of the health care team.

JOB DUTIES

1. Actively demonstrates the organizations mission and core values and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.

2. Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health safety and medical information.

3. Ensures that within their practice of their assigned unit patients physiological psychological and spiritual needs are met.

Clinical Component

Facilitates the RN in advocating on behalf of patients and family/significant others in dealing with difficult ethical legal and cultural issues.

Facilitates the RN in involving the patient family/significant others in all stages of the care planning as appropriate.

Facilitates the RN in making clinical decisions and exercising judgment about the care provided to patients.

Provides resource support for the RN to initiate implement direct and evaluate a nursing plan of care.

Acts as a clinical resource contact to the RN for patients families/significant others nursing staff other members of the health care team and external agencies.

Collaborates and communicates with the RN Manager Nursing Practitioners/specialists and the Clinical Educator.

In collaboration with the Manager makes critical decisions independently and timely.

Facilitates the RN to exercise judgment in the implementation of the multidisciplinary plan.

Facilitates the RN in absence of other health team members to take independent action in assessing planning implementing and evaluating the plan of care. Make changes as needed.

Facilitates the RN in initiating referrals to appropriate personnel based on knowledge of the scopes of practice of the health care team delegating activities to appropriate personnel and evaluating the outcome.

Facilitates the clinical team in using concepts of time management group process communication conflict management problem solving and decision making.

Participates in the Quality Assurance program in collaboration with the Manager.

Articulates the philosophy of nursing standards of practice and standards of care.

Educational Component

Participates in the delivery of educational programs to meet the personal learning needs of their practice and of the patients families/significant others students peers and other health professionals.

Collaborates with RNs Manager Nurse Practitioners/Specialists and Clinical Educators.

Acts as a resource to the RN in meeting education needs of the patients and families/significant others.

Identifies own professional growth needs and seeks opportunities to meet their needs as they engage in continuous learning strategies for clinical competence and to advance knowledge.

Administrative Component

Demonstrates leadership in the provision of nursing care to ensure quality patient care is maintained.

Accountable for their own action completes self-performance appraisals with professional objectives.

Participates in setting unit objectives annually.

In collaboration with the Manager performs functions to support the RN in coordination and communication of unit activities.

Assists in determining staff based on workload data and clinical judgment to meet patient care requirements.

Communicates with Manager and the multidisciplinary team with unit operations.

Problem solves regarding unit issues using consultation communication and negotiation skills.

Acts as a resource person to peers and other members of the multidisciplinary team.

Contributes to the effective and efficient use of resources and to the maintenance of a safe environment.

Collaborates with Manager regarding equipment supplies and environmental needs.

May be required to take a patient assignment depending on unit needs and availability of resources.

Identifies unit problems communicates to Manager and participates in resolving.

An advocate of nursing staff and profession of nursing. Provides input on performance of staff members to assist the Manager in evaluating staff performance.

Research component

Demonstrates awareness of nursing research literature as it applies to nursing care in their respective unit.

Maintains current nursing knowledge by reading relevant nursing research and other literatures.

Maintain awareness of protocols that impact patients on unit and identify appropriate research studies for implementation.

4. May interview applicants for assigned area of responsibility and recommends associate hiring corrective action

termination and ongoing associate performance evaluations. May assist in the completion of all required Human Resource activities related to hiring promotion/transfer corrective action payroll associate separation processes and procedures.

5. Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

Education: Graduate of an approved school of nursing. Bachelor of Nursing Degree preferred.

Licensure: RN Indiana License. BLS certification.

Experience: 3-5 years previous experience in clinical leadership role preferred.

Other Job Requirements:

Strong written/verbal communication skills.

Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design teaching and instruction for individuals and groups for the measurement of training effects.

Knowledge of human behavior and performance.

Assigned hours within your shift starting time or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and/or organizational needs.
