Description
- Performs routine or complex histologic procedures to assist physicians in diagnosis and treatment while upholding the values of the organization.
- This includes providing and demonstrating exemplary customer service skills throughout the preanalytical analytical and post analytical processes.
- May accession tissue specimens; prepares routine specimens for fixation in automatic processors.
- Embeds and sections specimens using a microtome. Affixes tissue to slides stains cover slips and labels slides.
- Maintains a reference system of control blocks and slides for use in special studies.
- Prepares fixative and staining solutions according to established laboratory procedures.
- May perform frozen section microtomy.
- Operates precision laboratory instruments and scientific equipment.
- Performs preventive maintenance according to established procedures and schedules.
- Troubleshoots equipment issues performs minor repairs adjustments or calibrations according to equipment service literature.
- Assists in the formulation and revision of departmental policies and procedures.
- Assists with monitoring and maintaining inventories of laboratory supplies and chemicals.
- Performs and participates in the review and reporting of quality control activities in the laboratory.
- Takes required precautions to comply with CAP organizational and other safety standards when working with specimens and laboratory equipment.
- May keep productivity records and document specific procedures to support laboratory activities.
- Assists in developing implementing and revising histologic policies and procedures.
- Evaluates reliability of current methodologies; recommends changes to improve current practices.
- Professional Development: Works with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attends educational in-services as appropriate.
- Participates in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends practices and developments.
- Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma.
- Certification as HT(ASCP) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists with a minimum of two (2) years experience or certification as HTL(ASCP) or HTL-by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists with no experience.
- Certification must be obtained within 18 months of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (Medium): 20-50 lbs; 0-33% of the work day (occasionally); 11-25 lbs 34-66% of the workday (frequently); 01-10 lbs 67-100% of the workday (constantly); Lifting 50 lbs max; Carrying of objects up to 25 lbs; Occasional to frequent standing & walking Occasional sitting Close eye work (computers typing reading writing) Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and work tasks.
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Factors affecting environment conditions may vary depending on the assigned work area and tasks. Environmental exposures include but are not limited to: Blood-borne pathogen exposure Bio-hazardous waste Chemicals/gases/fumes/vapors Communicable diseases Electrical shock Floor Surfaces Hot/Cold Temperatures Indoor/Outdoor conditions Latex Lighting Patient care/handling injuries Radiation Shift work Travel may be required.
