Pima County Conservation Lands & Resources is seeking a Cultural Resources Preservation Analyst to help steward and protect the Countys diverse cultural and historic resources. This position supports cultural resource monitoring and documentation on County lands contributes to research and planning efforts and plays a role in public education and volunteer stewardship programs. Working under the direction of the Cultural Resources Preservation Manager the Analyst collaborates with Tribal governments agencies and community partners to support responsible long-term management of cultural resources across Pima County.

This position supports the stewardship and protection of Pima Countys cultural resources through a combination of fieldwork research public education and interagency collaboration. Under the supervision of the Cultural Resources Preservation Manager responsibilities include conducting archival and GIS-based background research performing cultural resources field surveys and assessments and monitoring conservation lands and easements. The role involves data entry analysis and report preparation as well as facilitating educational programs for the public. The position assists in updating management plans supporting volunteer programs including the Site Steward Program and coordinating with Tribal governments agencies and stakeholders under the guidance of the Preservation Manager.

This classification is in the unclassified service and is exempt from the Pima County Merit System Rules.

Essential Functions:

  • Conducts background research using archival sources County databases and GIS tools;

  • Performs field monitoring and cultural resource assessments on County conservation lands and easements in response to reports or observed impacts;

  • Conducts pedestrian surveys and document cultural resources including preparation of required reports;

  • Enters and analyzes data to support report production and project documentation;

  • Develops and presents educational programming and materials for public engagement and volunteer stewardship;

  • Performs conditional assessments of cultural resources and provide findings and recommendations to the Preservation Manager;

  • Assists with collaboration and consultation involving Tribal governments agencies local jurisdictions and other stakeholders;

  • Supports the development and delivery of materials and training for the Site Steward Program;

  • Assists with revisions to cultural resource management plans for County-managed lands.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelors degree (B.A or B.S.) from an accredited college or university in history archaeology anthropology historic preservation or a closely related field as defined by the department head at the time of recruitment AND two years of experience in cultural resources management historic preservation or a related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

Preferred Qualifications: (Be specific in describing your experience in your application. Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):

  • Masters degree (M.A. or M.S.) from an accredited university in history archaeology anthropology historic preservation or a closely related field as defined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

  • Minimum four (4) years experience in cultural resources management historic preservation or archaeology.

  • Minimum two (2) years professional experience conducting archaeological or historic preservation fieldwork.

  • Minimum two (2) years professional experience conducting archaeological or historic preservation fieldwork in Southern Arizona or comparable Sonoran Desert contexts.

Selection Procedure:
Pima County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates that meet the minimum qualifications. All applications will be assessed based on an evaluation of the listed education and experience. Candidates meeting the minimum qualifications may be further evaluated/scored against any advertised Preferred Qualifications. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a referral list provided by Human Resources. Additional assessments/testing may be required as part of the selection process.

Licenses and Certificates:Valid driver license is required at time of application.ValidAZdriver license is required at time of appointment. The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicants suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures. Failure to obtain and maintain the required licenses and certifications shall be grounds for termination. Any offer of employment resulting from this recruitment is contingent upon Fleet Services review and approval of the candidates driving record.

Special Notice Items: The County requires pre-employment background checks. Successful candidates will receive a post-offer pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history education and criminal conviction history. A prior criminal conviction will not automatically disqualify a candidate from employment with the evening or weekend hours may be required for meetings or public events. Travel within Pima County is required; occasional out-of-county travel may be necessary.

Physical/Sensory Requirements: Work requires visual and auditory acuity; clear verbal communication; and manual dexterity for computer use and document handling. Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods walk over uneven terrain and occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Any additional physical and sensory work requirements will be determined by position.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in both office and field environments. Fieldwork may involve exposure to variable weather rough terrain and remote locations. Any additional working conditions will be determined by position.
