This is Recreation work supervising the safety and control of patrons in the weight room. This position assists and guides patrons in the use and care of exercise equipment and the facility. Includes some custodial and minor preventative maintenance tasks as required. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by a supervisor in terms of effectiveness of service provided and conformance to establish practices.
Some of the key responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
- Orients and instructs patrons on the safe use of the equipment. Enforces general rules of conduct in accordance with established procedures
- Sets up and checks that equipment is in good working order making minor adjustments and information supervisors when repairs are required
- Checks for proof of admission in accordance with established procedures
- Represents the Department and the City in a positive professional and customer friendly manner
- Demonstrates exercise and proper use of equipment to individuals and groups of all ages and abilities
- Maintains a variety of routine records and repots
- Stores equipment safely following the end of a program or service
- Ensures the weight room is kept clean safe and free of obstacles
The successful candidate for this position will have:
- Successful completion of Grade 12 or equivalent (GED)
- Six (6) months full-time equivalent previous experience in the area of physical fitness
- Standard First Aid
- BCPRA Fitness Theory Level One Certificate and BCRPA Weight Training Certificate
- Considerable knowledge of the methods used in proper exercise programs and the use of exercise equipment
- Considerable knowledge of the theory of movement body mechanics and the prevention and management of injuries
- Ability to effectively communicate and instruct a diverse range of individuals and groups of all ages and abilities on physical fitness exercises and to demonstrate a complete exercise package
- Ability to comprehend the mechanics of weight room equipment
- Ability to maintain control and exercise influence with tact and diplomacy in a professional and calm manner
- Ability to understand follow and carry-out oral and written communications
