Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

TeHerenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Workshop Modelmaker Technician to join Te Wāhanga Waihanga-Hoahoa - Faculty of Architecture and Design Innovations Technical Team on a permanent full-time basis.

The position will work closely with existing workshop technical staff at the Faculty 3D Modelling Workshops reporting to a Workshop Team Leader helping to provide general architecture and design physical model-making support to students and staff at the Faculty.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provision of architectural and design model-making technical support to workshop users.
  • Practical demonstrations and training to workshop users on both manual and digital CNC fabrication equipment and software.
  • Health and safety training and safety supervision of workshop users.
  • General maintenance and housekeeping of the workshop facilities and equipment.

The specific equipment and workshop area/s assigned to this position will depend on the background skills and experience of the successful applicant but can include:

  • Workshop making using various handtools materials and techniques.
  • Manual woodwork and metal work machinery operation.
  • Digital fabrication modelling equipment including CNC wood routers laser cutters and other CNC equipment.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will:

  • Ideally have a relevant trade or tertiary qualification or the equivalent industry experience using craftsmanship type trade practices with manual and digital making machinery relevant to the position and be a competent CAD computer user.
  • Be an energetic person with proven ability to work well within a team of people and to communicate and interact effectively with a wide variety of people from various backgrounds and ages providing face-to-face client focused support. Being able to work with younger students from diverse backgrounds is particularly important.
  • Ideally have previous experience supervising workshop users from a health and safety perspective however full training is provided.
