Purpose

The Tire Repair Worker is responsible for inspecting repairingreplacing and maintaining tires and wheel assemblies on City vehicles andequipment.

Essential Functions

TIRE INSPECTION REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT

  • Inspect wheels rims tires and tire tubes for damage; determine the proper course of action based on inspection results.
  • Evaluate tires for repair recapping warranty or scrapping; perform necessary action based on the evaluation results.
  • Inspect match and recondition rims for proper assembly.
  • Respond to service requests by providing prompt efficient tire-related road service to City vehicles.

ADMINISTRATIVE

  • Maintain tire inventory and complete work orders part requests and related forms to maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain shop cleanliness and perform various custodial functions and grounds maintenance including snow and ice control functions as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

The Tire Repair Worker must be willing and able to do thefollowing:

  • Be available for emergency call-in work during non-standard business hours including evenings weekends and holidays and for emergencies such as snow and ice control operations and other situations requiring the deployment of City equipment.
  • Perform physical activities in the work environment that require agility including ascending or descendingladders andstairs; walking and standing;and crawling crouching stooping kneeling reaching balancing pushing and pulling.
  • Perform very heavy physical labor i.e. moving various pieces of equipment up to 100 lbs. unassisted and transferring objects weighing 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Withstand prolonged exposure to variable and extreme weather conditions including rain wind excessive heat intense cold and snow.
  • Wear and use personal protective equipment (PPE) standard to tire repair including common and specialized safety equipment (i.e. shoes gloves glasses hearing protection safety vest and reflective clothing) as required.
  • Safely drive all departmental vehicles including heavy apparatus and perform snow plowing duties.

Required pre-employment tests include the following:

  • Physical Exam with Lift test
  • Vision Exam
  • Audio-Gram
  • Drug Screen

Minimum Requirements

  1. One year of professional experience mounting and repairing tires.
  2. Valid drivers license at the time of appointment and throughout employment.
  3. Commercial Drivers License (CDL) without Air Brakes restriction within six months of appointment and throughout employment.

NOTE: DPWFleet Services will provide education and training for employees who arerequired to obtain a CDL for their position with the City however it is theemployees responsibility to obtain their CDL by completing the following:

  • Passing the General Knowledge and Air Brakes portions of the Commercial Drivers License test given by the State of Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV)

AND

  • Passing a road test administered by an approved third-party administrator.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience may alsobe considered.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Certification in Tire Repair by the Tire Industry Association (TIA).

  • Knowledge of tire evaluation methods and standards.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools used in tire mounting dismounting and repair.
  • Knowledge of tire and wheel maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices in a shop environment including the ability to use hand tools safely.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices in the field environment including in and around traffic areas.
  • Situational awareness.
  • Ability to inspect tires tire tubes and rims.
  • Ability to repair tires and tire tubes.
  • Ability to evaluate tires to determine the need for recapping.
  • Ability to mount and dismount tires.
  • Ability to safely and properly inflate tires.
  • Ability to balance tires.
  • Ability to change tires in the shop and in the field.
  • Ability to operate job-related equipment such as a wheel balancer machine tire changing machine tire spreader tire inflation safety cage impact wrench floor jack tire bar bead seater hydraulic air jack air chuck and inflator machine.
  • Ability to safely and correctly brand tires.
  • Ability to safely operate and drive all department vehicles and heavy equipment such as passenger cars light trucks heavy trucks and forklifts.
  • Ability to proficiently operate electronic equipment including a computer telephone and other mobile devices.

  • Interpersonal skills to positively interact with all staff levels within the organization and the public.

Current Salary

The current starting salary (Pay Range 7BN) is$52637annuallyand the current resident incentive salary range for City of Milwaukee residentsis$54743. Appointment will be made in accordance with the provisions ofthe Salary Ordinance.

Employees will receive an additional 3% incentive forspecial assignments and an additional 5% incentive for lead work.
