Join the Wyoming State Forestry Division as an Assistant District Forester!

The Office of State Lands and Investments Wyoming State Forestry Division (WSFD) is excited to announce an opportunity for a passionate and dedicated individual to join our team as an Assistant District Forester. This role offers the chance to make a significant impact on the management of all forested lands in Western Wyoming including State Trust Lands Private Lands and land managed by the US Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

Position Overview:As an Assistant District Forester you will work under the direction of the District Forester and be at the forefront of forest and fuels management projects playing a crucial role in planning preparing and administering these initiatives. As the Assistant District Forester your duties include managing State forest resources cooperatively providing wildland fire protection and suppression delivering assistance forestry programs to local governments and private landowners including writing Stewardship plans conducting educational natural resource programs and providing technical forestry assistance to other State and local government agencies and addition you will work cooperatively with Federal land management agencies in order to implement Good Neighbor Authority projects. District 4 includes five counties Lincoln Sublette Sweetwater Teton and Uinta.

With its easily accessible public lands including the Bridger-Teton National Forest Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area and widespread BLM lands the region offers something for addition the area is within striking distance of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. The Wind River Range Wyoming Range and Uinta Mountains provide scenic alpine hiking opportunities. Western Wyoming is also renowned for its diverse wildlife populations and intact ecosystems. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.

  • Assists the District Forester with the preparation of the annual work plan goals and targets.
  • Provides technical forestry expertise to achieve objectives in state land forest management Good Neighbor Authority community forestry forest health and private landowner/cooperator assistance.
  • Participates in fire prevention suppression and fuel management activities in cooperation with local county state and federal entities.
  • Performs professional-level forestry work including silviculture timber sale preparation and administration inventory forest health management planning private landowner assistance fuels management and community forestry.
  • Administers timber sale and service contracts.
  • Conducts conservation education presentations for schools and other organizations.

Qualifications


PREFERENCES:

Preference may be given to candidates with a Bachelors Degree in Natural Resource Management with emphasis in Forestry.
Preference may be given to candidates who hold a current NWCG Incident Qualification System Red Card.
Preference may be given to candidates with extensive experience in writing forest management plans for private landowners.
Preference may be given to candidates with extensive experience in timber sale preparation and administration.


KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of forest management forest health fuels and community forestry principles
  • Knowledge of basicwildlandfirefighting principles and fire behavior
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Skilled in the use of forestry field equipment and navigation in mountainous terrain.
  • Skill in the use of software such as Microsoft Office Google Apps for Business and GIS.
  • Ability to drive four-wheel drive vehicles ATVs UTVs and experience towing and backing a trailer.
  • Ability to be detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently in a separate office from the District Forester.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Bachelors Degree (typically in Forestry)
Experience:
0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Forestry)
Certificates Licenses Registrations:
Possesses and maintains a valid drivers license.
Ability to achieve and maintain national certification (NWCG310-1) for a minimum of firefighter type 2.
OR
Education & ExperienceSubstitution:
3-5 years of progressive work experience (typically in Forestry)
Certificates Licenses Registrations:
Possesses and maintains a valid drivers license.
Ability to achieve and maintain national certification (NWCG 310-1) for a minimum of firefighter type 2.

Necessary Special Requirements


PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Performs arduous physical activity for extended periods and maintains required NWCG 310-1 physical fitness certification.
  • Position may require up to 40% overnight travel.
