JOB SUMMARY

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse Licensed Vocational Nurse or Physical Therapy personnel the RNA is responsible for working with residents needing restorative nursing measures to gain or maintain their highest possible practical functional level. Responsible for providing consistency between therapists work and carry over by nursing department on a daily basis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provides direct restorative care and delegated formalized therapy tasks as assigned completing work accurately safely and in a timely manner. Specific care to include: passive and active ROM ambulation special positioning techniques splints assistive feeding devices/adaptive equipment ADL training bowel and bladder management restorative dining bladder retraining.
  • Receives specific instructions from formalized therapies when the functions are beyond basic restorative nursing scope and receives supervision for these tasks from the indicated formalized therapy discipline.
  • Receives specific instruction from nursing on restorative nursing techniques through nursing orders.
  • Works with other disciplines as appropriate in setting up grooming exercise sensory stimulation classes etc.
  • Participates in restorative dining program and works with OT and other nursing staff in accomplishing set goals.
  • Coaches and assists CNAs in positioning ROM ambulation ADL cones/splints/contracture care ADL specifics safety device application appropriate padding and wheelchair cushions safety device release.
  • Coaches and assists CNAs to make sure residents have their recommended assistive feeding devices in dining room.
  • Follows protocols and procedures for restorative nursing care as set by nursing administration.
  • Attends care planning conferences and provides input into development of individualized plan of restorative care.
  • Informs charge nurse of suggestions for changes that he/she perceives as necessary for improving resident care that would help a resident reach their highest practicable functioning level.
  • Reports lack of functioning equipment and lack of adequate supplies to supervisor.
  • Assists with bladder retraining and works with staff in seeing that the program is properly carried out.
  • Documents progress of residents by completing flow sheets daily to signify that the specified restorative nursing measure was done. Makes weekly observation progression/regression note in narrative format.
  • Notifies charge nurse and supervisor when a resident is regressing/progressing or refusing to participate in the program so that an assessment can be done by nurses/rehab therapists and change in the program and care plan made as indicated.
  • Assists with orientation and staff development in principles and practices of restorative nursing as directed.
  • Works with CNAs as necessary to provide one-to-one when a resident is transferred from one RNA program to another.
  • Assists charge nurse in keeping lists of restorative approaches current and updated. If these measures are not on care plan informs charge nurse and supervisor so that an update will be done.
  • Informs charge nurse and supervisor if an approach is on the care plan is unrealistic and is not happening so that the care plan will be updated and accurately reflects the residents current status.
  • Understands the different levels of rehabilitation and the phases of a restorative nursing program and assists with interpreting this to CNAs.
  • Serves as a resource and teammate to other CNAs working with them to provide the specific restorative nursing care for each resident.
  • Assists in development of QI tools suitable for CNAs to utilize in performing QI audits for Restorative Nursing care for each resident.


Requirements

SKILLS ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE

  • Ability to perform nursing care per current community standard for long term care.
  • Interact effectively with residents visitors administration physicians volunteers and staff.
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations governing Long Term Care
  • Ability to read write and speak English in a clear manner.
  • Ability to understand and respond appropriately to cultural diversity.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS/LICENSES/CERTIFICATES

  • High School graduate or equivalent
  • Possession of valid California Certified Nursing Assistant certification.
  • Successful completion of a Restorative Nursing Assistant program.
  • BLS certification
