Job Summary:
Under general direction designs set-ups and conducts experimental programs and accurately obtains and records data; fabricates experimental apparatus. Performs R&D assignments that are not standardized or prescribed. May make modifications to experimental set-ups troubleshoot and correct equipment malfunctions as necessary and provide oral and written status reports. Main function is to test products to the given Standards.
Responsibilities:
Conducts a wide range of test procedures on product to the applicable standards and interprets the results of the test.
Determines and reviews which tests are required the order in which to perform tests and the number of samples required.
Performs tests and calculations compiles data and summarizes test results into test reports and checklists. Verifies calculations are consistent with results of measurements.
Determines whether a product passes or fails subject to review by Certifier/Reviewer.
Assembles and disassembles test samples hooks-up laboratory test equipment in preparation for testing and operates most laboratory test equipment without supervision.
Maintains good housekeeping of tools equipment and work area following tests and carries out assigned laboratory clean-up duties.
Records technical data and draft reports.
Performs mathematical calculations required to summarize test results as applicable.
Relates test results to product specifications.
Acts as a liaison with other departments as required by Manager.
Notes and records discrepancies or characteristics of products which may appear before or during the tests and refer them to Sr. Lab Tech Certifier or Manager.
Independently analyzes complex samples to determine compliance to applicable requirements.
Contributes to the development and implementation of requirements for new and/or revised standards as required
Interacts with the Certifier to plan activities exchange information review and approve lab reports and certification records.
Maintains and initiates direct certifier contact to provide information and answer questions or obtain more product information.
Tests to the certifiers requests and provides general and specific information about the certification testing process or status of a work order to assist the certifier and improve overall customer service and satisfaction.
Provides the certifier with detailed interpretation of test results and construction evaluation and how it applies to the status of their certification.
Performs witness testing as required by Sr. Lab Tech or Manager
Knowledge on how to operate test equipment.
Education & Experience:
3-year Technical Certificate or equivalent education and experience or
Associates degree in engineering technology
Professional Membership eg. ASTT OACETT or equivalent
1-2 years of related experience in piping & plumbing related role and/or laboratory environment
Knowledge of piping standards CSA ASME ASTM NSF would be an asset
Hands-on experience with test and measurement instruments e.g. micrometers calipers pressure gauges etc.
Computer literate with ability to use MS Office (Teams Word Excel) and learn testing software
Manual dexterity and comfort with various tools and equipment in lab environment
Skills:
Needs to be knowledgeable of safe practices; ability to move equipment around with assistance or independently; follow safety practices; ability to use a variety of equipment to perform daily tasks
Adaptable to a changing work environment.
Excel at research problem-solving and project management.
Excellent oral and written communication skills
Ability to interact with internal customers as well as external
Excellent interpersonal skills and proven ability to teach others and work independently and as a team player.
Excellent and effective time and project management skills in order to efficiently handle a variety of project requests in order to meet timelines for completion and on-time delivery.
Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Suite) as required learn and be proficient in CSA programs (CENTRA etc.) or any test equipment-based software.
As per the collective agreement the starting bi-weekly pay rate for a Lab Tech I is $2823.64 CAD gross and $3274.90 CAD gross for a Lab Tech II. CSA Group reserves the right to determine the appropriate level and pay step within the bandand thiswill depend on factors such as education licenses certifications and experience. As part of our total rewards offering permanent employees in this position may be eligible for our annual bonus program subject to program eligibility requirements.
