Software Engineer / Senior Software Engineer

About the Role
Bluestaqis seeking aSoftware Engineer or Senior Software Engineerto design build andmaintainsecure scalable software systems that support critical government and commercial missions.

In this roleyoullprimarily work on backend services APIs and data layers todeliver reliable maintainable features used by operators and analysts in high-stakes environments. Depending on your experience anddemonstratedcapability you mayoperateas a Software Engineer owning small features end-to-end or as a Senior Software Engineer leading larger features mentoring teammates and shaping technical decisions within your domain.

Key Responsibilities

Depending on level you will:

• Design implement andmaintainfeatures across the application stack (APIs services data)
• Write clean testable maintainable code following established patterns and standards
• Design and contributeunit integration andtargetedend-to-end tests to ensure system reliabilityand safe change over time
• Collaborate with product design and engineering peers to clarify requirements and technical tradeoffs
• Participate in code reviews design discussions and technical planning
• Debugproductionissues across services using logs metrics and debugging tools
• Communicate progress risks and blockers clearly to keep work moving

At theSenior Software Engineerlevel you will also:

• Own the technical design and delivery of medium-sized features orsubsystemsfrominitialdesignthrough production and operational support
• Evaluate and evolve service boundaries data models and integration patterns to support system scalability and reliability
• Mentor earlier-career engineers through pairing feedback and shared context
• Identifyand address technical debt refactoring opportunities and quality gaps
• Act as a technical escalation point within your product or service area
• Make sound design decisions balancing performance security maintainability and delivery

Required Qualifications

• Proficiencyin at least one modern programming language (e.g. Java Go Rust C#)
• Experience building production software that spans multiple layers of an application
• Solid understanding of software fundamentals (data structures APIs HTTP/REST)
• Experience with version control systemssuch as Gitand collaborative development workflows
• Ability to debug issues methodically and communicate technical concepts clearly
• Strong collaboration skills and a bias toward ownership and follow-through

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with cloud platforms and containerized environments
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated testing practices
• Experience with modern backend frameworks
• Understanding of relational and/or NoSQL databases
• Exposure to secure coding practicesandcompliance-driven environments
• Experience working on government defense or mission-critical systems

• Masters degree in Computer Science Engineering or a related field and 0 years of software engineering or related experience OR
• Bachelors degree in Computer Science Engineering or a related field and 2 years of software engineering or related experience OR
• Associate degree in a related field and 4 years of software engineering or related experience OR
• High School Diploma/GED and 6 years of software engineering or related experience.

Required Experience and Education(Senior Software Engineer):

• PhD in Computer Science Engineering or a related field and 0 years of software engineering or related experience OR
• Masters degree in Computer Science Engineering or a related field and 2 years of software engineering or related experience OR
• Bachelors degree in Computer Science Engineering or a related field and 4 years of software engineering or related experience OR
• Associate degree in a related field and 6 years of software engineering or related experience OR
• High School Diploma/GED and 8 years of software engineering or related experience.

Clearance Requirement:This position may require the ability to obtain a TS/SCI Clearance. To be eligible for a security clearance U.S. citizenship is required and an employee must agree to participate in a background screen and credit check. Eligibility for a TS/SCI Clearance will be assessed as part of the onboarding process or based on programmatic needs.

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
• Must be able to access and navigate each department at the organizations facilities.
