The Herron Classical Schools network (Herron High School Herron-Riverside High School and Herron Preparatory Academy) is a Mayor-sponsored charter network of public schools and a member of the Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) Innovation Network. The Herron Classical Schools network operates with the authority to make decisions about all aspects of our schools and is overseen by its own board of directors. As IPS Innovation schools we partner with IPS to give students a broader base of resources while maintaining our status as tuition-free public charter schools.

Job Summary
The Chief of Police provides overall leadership and administration for the Herron Classical Schools Police Department and serves as a School Resource Officer. This position oversees daily departmental operations policy and procedure development and community policing efforts all while ensuring a safe and secure school environment at all HCS campuses. As an SRO the Chief actively works with HCS leadership faculty staff and students to promote safety prevent crime and build positive relationships through visibility education and proactive law enforcement.
Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities
1. Provide overall leadership direction and management of the Herron Classical Schools Police Department.
2. Supervise all law enforcement at school campuses and at school-sponsored events.
3. Collaborate with the Director of Safety & Security to plan organize and ensure the safety and security of school campuses and school-sponsored events.
4. Develop implement and enforce departmental policies procedures and operational standards in compliance with state law accreditation requirements and school leadership directives.
5. Serve as the primary law enforcement advisor to school leadership and executive administration.
6. Oversee staffing scheduling supervision training and performance management of sworn officers.
7. Maintain all personal certifications required by law; ensure all officers are up to date on required certifications.
8. Lead and manage responses to critical incidents including criminal activity and any threats to safety on any HCS campus.
9. Coordinate and collaborate with local state and federal law enforcement agencies emergency management agencies and community partners.
10. Ensure compliance with all applicable laws training mandates certification requirements and reporting obligations.
11. Oversee investigations involving criminal incidents student and staff safety concerns and internal administrative matters.
12. Lead and assist with traffic control when and where needed.
13. Develop and manage departmental equipment needs inventory and resource allocation.
14. Establish and maintain campus security programs access control procedures and patrol strategies appropriate for an educational environment.
15. Serve as the departments public and professional representative with parents school officials government agencies and community stakeholders.
16. Provide leadership in school safety culture emphasizing prevention student engagement de-escalation and trauma-informed policing practices.
17. Participate in district safety committees threat assessment teams and multidisciplinary intervention teams.
18. Ensure proper documentation records management
19. An expectation of professional and ethical conduct and professional growth throughout the year.
20. Comply with all Herron Classical Schools policies procedures and guidelines as outlined in the HCS Employee Handbook.
21. Collaboratively works with school faculty staff and leadership to support the policies guidelines and working procedures for Herron Classical Schools.
22. Attendance at after-hour events that include but may not be limited to Parent Orientation Meet the Teacher Night Parent/Teacher Conferences and Open Houses. The dates of these events are listed on the Master Calendar or shared by HCS leadership.
23. Performs other duties as determined necessary by Executive leadership and the Director of Safety and Security.
Qualifications
1. Bachelors degree from an accredited institution of higher education required.
2. Minimum 10 years of professional experience; school-based experience preferred.
3. Certification: (ILEA) Certified TIER 1: Basic Class Certified; certified as a Chief or attend a Chief School at the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy within one year of appointment.
4. Proven ability to provide exceptional service to faculty staff students and families.
5. Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and changing priorities on a daily basis.
6. Ability to work in a team-based environment.
7. Ability to work in an environment with children.
8. Must be able to pass a physical fitness assessment (Indiana Law Enforcement Academy ILEA entrance standards)
9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
