DescriptionThe Postdoctoral Researcher will spend the 2026-2027 academic year in residence on the UT Knoxville campus working with the regular Papers of Andrew Jackson staff on all aspects of historical documentary editing.
A long-running and highly regarded project the Jackson Papersseeks to make widely available the full written record of the seventh U.S. president. The Postdoctoral Researcher will join an existing team and spend the year working on Volumes XIII: 1835 and XIV: 1836. The Researcher will collaborate with regular staff on all aspects of historical documentary editing. Specific responsibilities include transcribing annotating and calendaring documents; proofreading andfact-checking;indexing volumes;conducting research inbothoriginal records and scholarly literature; and expanding our online offerings. Applicants should hold a PhD in History with a preferred research specialty in US history of the early national through Civil War eras.
Responsibilities- Transcription and annotation of historical documents preparation of document citations and descriptions for document calendars and research assistance for editors
- Copyediting proofreading and indexing PAJ volume XIII
- Transcribing and preparing images of documents for posting to project website
QualificationsRequired Qualifications
Education: PhD in History
Experience: No specific editing experience is required
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
Strong general knowledge of nineteenth-century US history
Ability to read nineteenth-century US manuscripts
Doctoral-level historical research skills
Solid word processing skills
