Mental Health Counsellor (Out of Scope)

Location Dr. K.A. Clark School

Temporary: March 2 - June 25 2026 (possibility to extend)

FTE 1.0

Start Date March 2 2026

Requirements: The Ideal Candidate would possess one of the following credentials:

  • Registered Clinical or Educational Psychologist (RPsych LP LCPC Ed Psych.
  • Psychiatric Nurse (RPN) who specializes in mental health Nursing or Occupational Therapist who can help with mental health challenges.
  • Social Worker (BSW RSW RCSW MSW)
  • Minimum of Bachelor of Psychology Social Work or Counselling with advanced practice in the assessment and treatment of mental emotional and behavioural disorders. *** Master of Psychology Social Work or Counselling (or a significant completion of this program) is an asset.
  • Must be registered with ACTA or ATA.
  • Benefits included (including pension plan).

Desired Qualifications/Skills :
  • The successful candidate will have specific knowledge and training in counselling and be able to support regular classroom teachers with specialized teaching strategies in regards to supporting dysregulated students and overall mental health.
  • Experience an educational setting and educational assessments including literacy and numeracy assessment information report cards and other such diagnostic evaluations.
  • Host focus groups or other qualitative data collection methods.
  • Be able to build positive relationships with elementary aged students families and staff.
  • Be willing to provide professional growth opportunities both formally and informally.
  • Be able to work on a team collaborate and participate in the school Professional Learning days and with an online Community of Practice.
  • Providing training and support to teachers for students for social and emotional development anxiety and strategies to build student resilience and independence is needed.
  • Calls from parents in crisis - reach out to parents to support when needed connect to resources.
  • Deliver preventative best-practice interventions and related psycho-social development programs as approved by the Division.
  • Comply with provincial regulations and Division policies with respect to the provision counselling services records management and learning supports.
  • Track caseload data and evaluate the effectiveness of counselling services learning supports and student responses to interventions. Candidate must demonstrate the ability to be well-organized and punctual with record keeping and report submission.
  • Liaise with external professionals/agencies toward integrated understanding and support of students and families.
  • Must be a collaborative team player who is able to take initiative without direct supervision and be able to work on a multi-disciplinary team in a school setting.
  • Experience with making referrals for therapeutic support and outside community agencies who support students and families.
