JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Senior Mechanical Systems Support Technician provides advanced expert-level technical leadership in support of the Universitys academic research and operational missions. This position bridges research support with facilities operations by designing fabricating modifying and maintaining highly specialized laboratory systems and campus mechanical infrastructure. This position serves as the lead member of the Mechanical Systems Support unit providing technical oversight coordinating workflow mentoring staff and ensuring seamless operation of critical mechanical HVAC and laboratory systems across the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. This position is classified as an Essential Services Employee. Essential Services Employees maintain business operations for UT Health Science Center and support the physical operations and safety of the campus. This role involves performing various operations and services essential to maintain critical infrastructure and ensuring continuous operations.
ResponsibilitiesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as the lead technician for the Mechanical Systems Support unit coordinating daily assignments prioritizing work orders and overseeing project workflow.
Provides advanced troubleshooting technical guidance and mentorship to Mechanical Systems Support Technicians and student workers.
Performs complex repairs and system diagnostics beyond journey-level capability ensuring rapid resolution of high-impact system failures.
Supports the installation integration and commissioning of new laboratory and building equipment.
Installs inspects troubleshoots and repairs a broad range of mechanical systems including refrigeration units pumps compressors ductwork pneumatic/hydraulic systems sheet metal components and machinery weighing up to 15 tons.
Develops modifies and implements preventive maintenance programs to enhance system reliability and optimize equipment lifespan.
Coordinates and interfaces with external vendors contractors and service providers to ensure successful implementation of projects and repairs.
Monitors supply levels coordinate procurement and maintain accurate records of equipment usage and maintenance activities
Participates in campus-wide emergency preparedness and response activities related to mechanical systems and critical infrastructure.
Performs other related duties as required.
QualificationsMINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:High School Diploma or GED. (Technical certification or vocational training in mechanical systems HVAC engineering technology or related fields strongly preferred.) (TRANSCRIPT IS REQUIRED)
EXPERIENCE:Eight (8) years of progressively responsible mechanical HVAC or technical systems experience including a senior lead or specialist role; ORcombination of education and experience to equal eight (8) years. (Certification in HVAC welding machining or industrial systems (EPA 608 OSHA NCCER etc.) preferred.)
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Shelby County 1st class refrigeration operators license EPA Universal Certification and OSHA 10 Certification or higher required OR obtain Shelby County 1st class refrigeration operators license EPA Universal Certification and OSHA 10 Certification within six months of hire. Valid Drivers License is required. (COPY OF LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Expert-level mechanical diagnostic fabrication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to read and interpret technical schematics blueprints engineering drawings and equipment manuals.
Strong communication leadership and customer service abilities.
Proficiency with machine shop equipment welding systems and precision instrumentation.
Ability to work independently and under pressure including high-stakes emergency conditions.
Physical ability to lift 50 pounds and work in confined spaces mechanical rooms rooftops and varied environmental conditions.
WORK SCHEDULE:This position is required to report to designated work locations to ensure the operation of essential campus functions or departments during an emergency or when the University has suspended or delayed operations. May occasionally work weekends and evenings. May require overnight travel.
